Using the Roku mobile app as a substitute for the remote

My remote is broken and I use my phone to connect to my Roku stick. I’m now on a new wifi network and I can reconnect to my stick because I can’t get to the menu. Is there a way to do this, or do I need a remote?

  • Unless you can connect to the old network, you will need a new remote.

  • You’ll need a physical Roku remote or temporarily connect your Roku to the old Wi-Fi network it remembers. Here's what you can do:

Option 1: Use the Old Network

    1. Rename your new Wi-Fi (SSID + password) to match your old network exactly.
    2. Roku will auto-connect.
    3. Use the Roku mobile app to control it and change the Wi-Fi.

Option 2: Buy or borrow a Roku remote

You need a physical remote to connect to a new Wi-Fi if the Roku isn’t already connected.

✅ TL;DR: You need a remote unless you can recreate the old Wi-Fi network.
