Update error 004 over and over

I can't get my roku to update. I keep getting to 100% and then an error code 4. If it's really a network error, why can I watch TV on the device?  I've tried with 2 networks and a Hotspot and keep getting the same error. And every time I turn it on I have to go thru the same process 2 to 3 times before I can just watch with the Roku as is.

  • After having the same problems as those listed this finally worked for me. Step one start up the Roku, get the screen asking if you want to update and select maybe later. Step two go to settings, software update, check now, and attempt to update (for me it failed).  Step three do it again and my Roku finally updated.

Other option is to go into the Secret Reset and Update menu; To get there Press the Home button on your remote 5 times, then press Fast Forward > Fast Forward > Fast Forward > Rewind > Rewind

Once in there look at the left side and find what it says for “software update server” and it most likely is set as Beta. To change you will go down to the Cycle software update server option and hit select to cycle it. This will change from the beta server to standard release server and for there you can exit and your update should work.

  • Bumped into this problem also and also found this thread.

Here is how i solved the problem:

I went in to the secret screen (5x home, 3x fastforward, 2x fastbackward) and learned that the updateserver was set to BETA for some reason. Its for sure it wasnt me who changed that setting! I switched to RELEASE and after that the update worked.

  • It worked after the 2nd try by going to the settings and updating. Thanks!

  • You are a massive frustration saver! Thank you very much for this fix! I changed the server you said the first time and it didn't work, but then I had to change both servers and update and it took! 🙌🏻

Dohnut, Thanks I've been frustrated by this error for over a week, your 2nd manual update advice worked for me!  I don't understand it, but I guess that doesn't really matter.

Glad it worked and yes I agree that is a weird fix. I hope that will allow Roku support to replicate and see how their code is working and hopefully resolve the issue as it definitely is not a network issue.

I checked, my update server was also set to "Beta".  I switched it to "release", I didn't test the update since my S/W is current, after the double manual update.

I also showed beta but had already updated as well. Good to know about the “secret screen”.

I checked mine and it's set to RELEASE.  I still cannot update.

Fdwife77, have you tried the "double manual update", that worked for me?

I used your method, and even though I didn't have to change anything, the update worked! No more frustration! Thank you!

Welcome, and thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, JasonTe.

Thanks for raising your network issues with us. Rest assured that we will find you the best resolution possible.

May we first know if the error code 004 only appears when you are trying to update your system version? In addition, can you please let us know your current system version and on what Roku streaming device you are having this issue with?

Furthermore, have you tried to perform a system reboot on your device? You can do it by navigating to your Home screen. Scroll up or down to select Settings > System > Power (skip if unavailable) > System restart

We look forward to your response and are more than willing to provide you with an accurate resolution.

    Kind regards,
    Carly

Model 3900RW - Roku Express. Software version 12.5.0 is currently on the device. I've also started getting different error codes. 005 and 003.

Error codes 001 - 005 indicate an update error.  Could be anything from a user's internet connection, to an issue with Roku's own servers. (the watch on the wrist means wait/try again later).

If you have a mobile hotspot available to you, try connecting your Roku device to that and performing the update request.  Otherwise, try restarting all your network equipment (modem, router, extenders, etc) and also reboot your Roku. (either pull the power plug for a min, or go to Settings/System/System Restart, or Settings/System/Power/System Restart depending on Roku model).

A little basic info regarding the update errors is contained in the following Roku Support article. (https://support.roku.com/en-au/article/115002796148)

Tenho o mesmo problema e nada funciona...

Restauração de fábrica, reset pelo botão da TV, outra rede, nada...

Não tive suporte da fabricante da TV (AOC) e estou procurando em fóruns da internet para ver se alguém pode me ajudar.

    • This is a issue. Ive got a whole new router. Checked the connection on the roku and its connected. This is another issues besides connectivity

  • Hi,

I was streaming normally before until my roku express was forcibly prompted to update with no option to update later.

Issue is that it keeps failing to install since it loads the update all the way to 100% and then produces error 004 "can't update software, Please try again later".

UPDATE: Now, it´s just forcibly trying to update on its own!
it doesn´t even require my input anymore

2ND UPDATE: It's back to normal after sucessfully restarting although its not clear ,if the update was made since when checked it says it still misssing one software update

    Please, help!?

We are having the same issue with failed update with error 004 for the past two days.  Tried unplugging and plugging back in.  Still no success.

The update got up to 83% twice and then gave the error 004 message.

Same problem. Fortunately a hard power off/on fixes it. Somebody screwed the pooch on this one and let untested S/W go out the door. Hopefully Roku's S/W "engineers" will find their bug and release another update.
