Tv turns off and on by itself

Has anyone come across where your Roku tv turns on and off by itself? I have a 65 inch Onn roku. Just had it for about 4 days. I’ve looked on google some people have said using a wire hanger of some sort and hit the reset button and hold it for about 15 seconds. However, their tv is a different brand than mines. Can anyone help me out as to how to fix it?

  • First thing I would try would be a system restart (not the same thing as turning off and on).  From the Roku home screen use menu path Settings > System > Power >  System restart.  (On a separate Roku device the menu path is Settings > System > System restart.)  If the problem you're having doesn't let you control the Roku via the remote, you can restart by pulling the power plug for 30 seconds or so then plugging back in.

If that doesn't fix it, the factory reset you were describing requires you to hold the reset button, which may be behind a pin hole, for a minimum of 30 seconds.  Alternately you can use menu path Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset. Either way this will clear out the unit's memory and you'll then have to set it up again as though it were a new unit right out of the box.

Anybody got a solution for this issue when it doesn't even stay on long enough to use the remote to get to settings? Roku does not answer their phone.  And since this issue is so common, you'd think there would be an update of some kind to prevent it going forward.

Roku TV is powering off and on continually, within seconds.  I've tried a factory reset but I've only been able to connect to wifi.  When I try to log into the roku account, I've been able to get to the point where it's loading the channels, however that's when it really powers off and restarts within seconds, not allowing the setup to continue.  This is where I need to start the process again of logging into the roku account.

I've unplugged, reset factory settings.  What do I do next?

There are too many of us having the exact same problem. @ROKU needs to get their **** together and fix their system,  recall these TVs or offer repair. Sending us to the TV manufacturer is just kicking the can down the road

  • This is not a reset-the-Roku problem.  I have it too, and it's because somewhere the Roku thinks there has been enough inactivity (video paused, no video chosen, etc.) that it's time to turn off the TV.  Conversely, if I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes the Roku has turned my TV on again.  This just started happening when I recently got my new Roku Streaming Stick 4K.  I think this product in general, not just mine, may have some faulty features because it seems to work fine otherwise.  Note that I do like it controlling TV volume but I sure don't need it to turn the TV on/off.

The OP was asking about a Roku TV, but for jeffuke  - try turning off 1-touch play on the Roku (Under Home->Settings->System->Control other devices.)

Roku operating system version 10.5 added a new "Power" item in the "Settings > System" menu for some of the latest Roku models. In my estimation, these power management options weren't very well thought out. If this is the cause of your problem, it has been reported that pressing the Roku remote's Home key should bring it to life.

If you have a "Settings > System > Power" menu item, under "Auto power savings" see if deactivating "After 20 minutes of no interaction" keeps the Roku from shutting down.

I think you might be correct. I restarted Roku many times to no avail. I did all troubleshooting steps known to me, no change. It always turns on in the middle of the night. I had my tv for almost a year now and it just started to do this this month. I wonder if it is a flaw in one of their updates.

My 55 in tv just recently stated saying THANKING.... always around 6 to 605 Central eastern time zone. And like someone else said in my other  room I have a 60 in RUKU TV(both are  smart tv not a RUKU stick) I say that because someone eles on here had the same problem with the RUKU stick I would leave to go use the restroom or something and my other TV came on. I thought I was being hacked or something.

  • Have you tried going to settings >power>auto power savings and uncheck the box next to turn off after 4 hours.
also settings>network>bandwidth saver and turn it off.

Same problem started with my 2 year old TCL Roku TV a few months ago. First it started randomly powering on in the middle of the night. I have to unplug it at night now to prevent it from happening. Also, recently it began cycling through inputs all by itself, and shuts off and restarts itself constantly. I've tried changing the power outlet, factory reset, disabling CEC, all the things. I've just decided it's a garbage product, and now that's where the TV belongs...of course all of this began right after the warranty expired. I am not going to be replacing this TV with another Roku product. I've read so many posts about this issue from other Roku TV owners, and Roku has never once replied with any kind of solution.

        Hi RBC77,

A warm welcome here in the Roku Community, and thanks for keeping us posted!

We apologize for the inconvenience, and this is not what we aim for. This may be related to a hardware issue. Have you tried contacting TCL support yet to inquire further? I'd suggest starting there to see what options or suggestions they can provide. Each Roku TV manufacturer provides direct support for their products running the Roku OS.

        You can reach them here.

        Regards,
        John

  • I have the same issue. Here is what I have done so far. Power drain and reset. system restart, made sure one touch is disabled, screen saver disabled, no timer set, no CEC enabled, no fast start enabled. Changed batteries in remote (apparently low batteries can cause this issue). I am down to factory reset now, unless someone has any other ideas. But try any of my steps, they might help you.

I think I found the culprit. My boyfriend's Xbox. He has his own Roku account and plugged his Xbox into my TV. I figured this out after I contacted Roku Tech support and when they sent me the recap to our chat, it had his name on it, even though I was signed into my account at the time of the chat. Looks like his Xbox is interfering with my Roku account, trying to override it with his login. I will test it further and update.

we don’t have an xbox or anything else and only one account so not sure that matters. this happens every day all day. literally happened while i was writing my last message

  • most annoying thing ever. i have 6 TVs and only the 3 roku TVs do this. random shut off. sometimes it’s after it’s been on an hour sometimes a minute. everything is updated. same outlets they have always been plugged into. i have clears the power saving options but like i said it could happen after 1 minute and it’s doesn’t que you just turns off. one of these is out on the porch where it wouldn’t have interference from other remote devices. one TV is 4 years old. one is less than a year and one is brand new, less than a week old. they all do it. it’s obviously something roku did to their software through remote upgrades. very disappointing.
