"The USB device is drawing too much current. Please remove the device" - Roku 3930R/Sony TV

Last night while streaming Apple TV to our Sony tv the message "The USB device is drawing too much current. Please remove the device." showed.

We tried the following debugging

  • switch the USB power to a wall plug.
  • reboot the device.
  • reboot the tv.
  • change the USB port on the tv - there are two 1. 500mA max 2. 900mA max
  • switched cables, switched wall/USB devices

TV works fine - Nintendo Switch and an older Roku device both have no issues.

The 3930R seems to now be completely unresponsive.

  • when plugged into wall socket - nothing
  • when plugged into either tv USB port the message shows. It disappears when the USB cable is removed.
  • Neither of those USB ports is sufficient as it requires 1A minimum.  If it's not working when plugged into the wall, I would suspect whatever USB power adapter you're using is faulty or insufficient.  Try another one if you have one lying around.  Look at the fine print on the USB power adapter/charger - it should say something like, Output:  5V 1A (or 1000mA).  Greater then 1A/1000mA is OK as well.
