The Roku Simple Remote uses IR (infrared), so no pairing with the player is needed. They really are a simple device, and they either work or they don't.

The first thing to check is if the batteries are installed correctly. Some Roku remotes have both batteries facing the same way, while others have one reverse of the other. Look inside the remote case for a sticker or other indication which way the + and - ends of the batteries go for each one.

If the batteries are installed correctly and you're certain they're good, then test the remote by looking at the end of the remote through a digital camera. The camera in your cellphone will work just fine. Watch the remote end while pressing different buttons on the remote. If you see flashing lights, then the remote is working.

If the lights don't flash, then the remote has failed and needs replacing. If the remote works, then make certain you have a clear line of sight between the remote and the Roku. IR will not passthrough anything that blocks the IR receiver window on the front of the Roku.

Also something to test is if the TV has a power light and you aim the roku remote and try changing the volume it would likely flash on the TV.

  • I have been having the same issue since yesterday. The remotes are not working/communicating with the TV anymore. The mobile app helps to navigate. IS it a new software update at roku? I have been a Roku FAN since 2013. Never experienced this issue before.

  • I just discovered that my voice pro remote control that came with my newest Roku was not dead from the battery (Mine has to charged up by USB).  The remote was not properly paired with the Roku. Not sure why it is losing its pairing but that fixed the remote once I did that again. I thought the internal battery was defective but apparently the issue is in the pairing and keeping it paired.

PS: I had literally just figured this out. LOL.
