TCL Roku tv simple remote not pairing.

I have an older tcl Roku tv at my home in another country.  It’s always worked fine, but now the simple remote that came with it is not working. It won’t communicate with the TcL in any way.  Two brand new Duracell AAA batteries properly installed.  I’ve tried the “home button/back arrow” 5 - 10 second press repeatedly, no help. I reset the tv entirely, thinking that might help, but now I’m just stuck on the welcome, pick a language and get started page.  The console buttons are so elementary that there is no apparent way to run the set up or set itself manually.  What recourse do I have? I have a streaming Roku device that works, but of course it did not work when connected to the hdmi outlets on this set.  If I purchase a new remote, what’s the likelihood it’ll work? I have to travel 9 hours to this country to get here.  Any suggestions?

Simple remotes don't pair - you just point it at the TV and it either works or it doesn't.  You can see if the remote is transmitting by pointing at a digital camera like the one in your phone.  When you press buttons on the remote, you should see flashes coming from the remote on the camera's screen.  If the remote seems to be transmitting, the receiver in the TV may have died.  A new remote wouldn't help in that case.
