Roku Streaming Stick 3820X not updating.

I’ve been trying to update my Roku for almost 2 hours now. I’ve received error codes 000, 003, and 023.4 between my two streaming sticks.

Here are all the fixes I’ve attempted:

1.  Restarted routers.

2. Unplugged Roku for 5+ minutes.

3. Factory restart.

4. Connected to my mobile hotspot. (It connected but gave me the same 000 error code as my wifi).

5.  Direct LAN connection to the TV.

My wifi is working. I’ve tested it on multiple devices. I am completely unable to access the settings menu. It goes straight to the “something went wrong” message.

Very frustrated at this point.

Me, too, I'm using model 3900. This started last night. My system bailed in the middle of a program. The Roku updated its software, but kept failing at the "installing final updates" stage. It would grind away at 0% for awhile, and then return a 023.4 error. The internet connection shows as "excellent." I've tried nearly all the things the OP has done, repeatedly. Now that I've initiated a factory reset, it returns a "000" error after trying to download software. Again, the internet connection shows as being "excellent."

Yes, as the OP says, this is very frustrating.

  • I am having the exact same issue.  this started last night and has continued until now.  I have done all I know to do.  My internet connection is great.  My other televisions that run off of this are also working fine.  I am soooo frustrated.

I spent an hour and 41 minutes on the phone last night with Roku tech support. (Some of that was on hold awaiting pickup by the agent to whom the issue was escalated.) We were not successful at getting my system running. One thing he wanted to do that we couldn't do was to get the Roku running on my iPhone hotspot. That was the next step in his troubleshooting sequence. I never did understand what this was supposed to tell us. But at any rate, for some reason, it would not connect to the hotspot on either of our phones, though other devices would. Our phones here are both SEs, 3rd gen. They are modern phones. The tech seemed to have never heard of an SE.
One thing I tried this morning was a hard reset. (Pressing the button on the Roku unit. Per the tech, "Press that button for seven seconds. No more, no less.") I ended up at the exact same place: the Roku attempts to download for a long time, then returns a "000" error, while also showing an excellent internet connection. I ordered a new Roku today, ETA 10/23. I'll report back on how that goes.

The ability to connect to a hotspot/alternative network would help narrow down whether a hardware issue or a network issue.

Are you able to use the Roku 3820 at all to stream and just having trouble updating, or are you having streaming issues as well?

Same issue, assuming the Roku Streambar's in the house updated over night, but I have Pihole setup for my local DNS.  I had blocked several connections from Roku for privacy reasons:
    cloudservices.roku.com
    image.roku.com
    rsp.web.roku.com
    api.rpay.roku.com
    channels.roku.com

Once I removed the block, the setup proceeded without issue.

If tech support is asking you to hotspot from another device, it means your Roku device would get another set of IP's assigned from your hotspot device, effectively bypassing the DNS on the primary network having issues (if unchanged, this is your ISP provided DNS), allowing the Roku to successfully connect to the servers for updates/app repositories for the download.

What you can also do if you do not own or manage your DNS, try setting the DNS on the Roku to other open DNS addresses to see if the connection succeeds:

    8.8.8.8 - Google | DNS Address
    8.8.4.4 - Google | DNS Address
    1.1.1.1 - Cloudflare | DNS Address
    208.67.222.222 - OpenDNS | DNS Address
    76.76.19.19 - Alternate | DNS Address
4.2.2.2 Level 3 Communications DNS | DNS Address

I was not seeing the ability to set a static address for this Roku Streambar directly from the Roku settings
(if you are a Roku employee, please add this feature ASAP, I can imagine it would help immensely with your troubleshooting for customers) but if you have access to your firewall, you can modify the DHCP settings to change the DNS address DHCP will provide your device. (DHCP is what gives your device an IP address after connecting to the wireless, or plugging in a network cable)

If you can successfully set a DHCP reservation specifically for your device (using the MAC address printed on the back/bottom of the device) then you can tell the firewall to issue a specific IP address with the corrected DNS set, or  if you want to just change the DNS address for all devices using DHCP, that might be easier (No MAC address necessary for this change)

I'm not a Roku technician, but I can help if anyone is having further issues.
Hopefully everyone on here eventually got their device working, but if not please send me a message on here or reply to this post and I'll see what I can do.

    Thanks,
