Roku Remote Volume Problem

I seem to have an ongoing problem with volume and mute buttons. After about a year of getting a new remote for our Roku Ultra the volume and mute buttons start malfunctioning. Repairing the remote to the device and TV doesn't work. All other functions work. The latest remote is the Roku Voice Remote Pro. Does anyone have an idea of what is causing the problem?  JHart

I just started having same problem after putting in new batteries.  Volume scrolls uncontrollably.  I’ve done all the fixes and nothing works. This 4K Roku is just a few months old.

These Roku remotes seem to have a lot of issues. Luckily I've never had a problem with my mute and volume buttons not working completely, although there are times when I've pressed them and nothing happens immediately. Mostly I am extremely annoyed with the location of the buttons on the remote in the first place. They should fire whatever 'genius' at Roku who is responsible for the dumb idea of putting the buttons on the right side of the remote, because it was extremely stupid!

You can easily press the volume up & down or mute buttons by accident just by picking the remote up because you have to grab it by the sides with your fingers. These buttons should be located on the front of the remote, just like any other normal remote would have them! That's how the Fire TV remotes are and you never have to worry about muting the TV or messing up the volume just by picking the remote up by the sides. There is absolutely plenty of space for these buttons to be placed on the front of the remote, so a 'space saving' excuse as to why they have to be on the sides I will call BS on! These remotes need a complete redesign and Roku needs to employ basic common sense when designing them in the future!

It's time to redesign a better remote Roku, this same lame design has been going on for too long!

I agree that sometimes the volume and mute buttons don't function perfectly - especially the mute - it seems to be especially too sensitive to touch - the slightest touch will sometimes cycle mute off and on over and over again. It just takes some getting used to.

But I am totally against putting the buttons on the face of the remote. One of the things I like best about Roku is the simplicity of the remote. In fact, my very first Roku device had far fewer buttons on it than the current remotes, it didn't even have the 4 dedicated buttons on the bottom portion for Netflix or other services (I would pay a little more not to have these ad buttons at all). It's ridiculous how many buttons my TV remote has and I would hate it if Roku added more top buttons than it already has.

Every other Roku Voice Remote I've had has worked great. This model is a lemon - it's defective and Roku should be doing something about it. You have to push the volume control buttons extremely hard to get the function to work, and even then, it doesn't work every time. I've still got my old Roku Voice Remote, and its volume buttons still work every time. I was only replacing it because the battery cover is loose, and we have to tape it to keep the battery cover in place. I don't know what Roku changed with this new model, but the volume buttons are defective. It's not a pairing issue because when you've pushed the buttons hard enough, the volume does go up and down. The volume buttons are defective. Buyer beware - read the reviews. There are many people complaining of the same issue.

  • Hi JHart, It sounds like you're experiencing a recurring issue with the volume and mute buttons on your Roku remotes over time. While it's unusual for only these specific buttons to malfunction, it could be due to frequent use causing wear and tear. Another possibility is a software glitch or interference with the TV's IR sensor. To isolate the issue, try using the remote with another Roku device or TV, if available. If the problem persists across devices, it might be a design flaw or batch issue with the Roku Voice Remote Pro. Consider reaching out to Roku's customer support for further assistance or potential replacements.

      1. The problem with the volume buttons not functioning is regarding two brand new voice remotes - model RC833. This is not an issue with long term use of an older remote

      2. The problem is that you must press the volume button extremely hard to get it to work. There is no issue with the mute button.

      3. There is no issue with interference or a glitch, or setup, because when you do press the volume button extremely hard it does work (sometimes). And both older voice remotes work without issue.

      4. I've used Roku systems for 8+ years and never had any problems with the remotes until these new remotes. These new remotes were recemtly purchased. One I purchased separately, and one I got with my new Roku Streaming Stick 4K.

      5. I've followed the steps to pair and unpair the remotes, and to setup the remotes, and this does not resolve the problem with the volume button.

      6. It is clearly a design flaw with the new Roku Voice Remote Pro. You can see on the Roku website, and on Amazon reviews, that my complaint is just one of many 100s of others with the exact same issue with the volume button on the new Roku Voice Remote Pro

      6. I am using old Roku remotes now, and their volume buttoms functions perfectly. My old Roku Voice Remotes are model RC399. My new Roku Voice Remote Pros, with the non-functioning volume buttons are model RC833.

      7. I believe that the problem is a design flaw or bad production batch issue with the Roku Voice Remote Pro, like you suggested. I will contact Roku's customer support for further assistance / potential replacements.

      Thank you.

        11/20/23 Update:

I contacted Roku Customer Service as suggested, and they were able to quickly resolve the issue. It was a batch production issue in which the case was too small to allow the volume button to work properly. Customer Service is replacing my two Roku Voice Remote Pros with the non functioning volume buttons.

        Thank you Roku!!
