Roku remote not working

Hello Community!

I am trying to use a Roku gifted to me several years ago. It worked well then...but not now. The Roku unit has a "2" on the top, and the remote is a Simple Player Remote with Mgo, amazon, Netflix and Blockbuster streaming buttons (yup-pretty old).

I have connected the device to 2 different TVs with a good HDMI cable. I have cleaned the remote battery connectors and inserted 1 set of new batteries, and 1 set of known-to-work batteries from another remote.

I installed the Roku app on my phone and tried to manually connect the device. I have accessed my router info to see that the Roku is not connected to it.

I want to use all the resources I have: I do not want to buy another remote (I've not had success with "universal" remotes).

Does anyone have suggestions for how to connect an older, undamaged Roku device with the undamaged-but-not-working remote, or the device with the Roku app when I cannot connect the device manually to the app b/c there is no IP address?

  • Depending on the model of the Roku, it could be obsolete.  If it is old enough to have blockbuster on it, it is probably not usable as it is not upgradable to the latest firmware and the newest streaming apps will not work on it.  What is the model of your Roku and the OS version number? Current operating system is 14.5 or higher and OS's that are version 11 or older will have issues working correctly.
