Roku Premiere suddenly turns on the TV

I have a Roku Premiere. When I finish using it I go to the home screen, then select the power option that turns off my television. When I wake up in the morning, or come home from work, or even just come back to the room after taking care of a chore or something, the television will be back on.

When I turn the T.V. off with its remote, it will be back on after a while.  I have a screen saver set up to cycle pictures when the Roku is idle for 20 minutes or so.  Could this be causing the TV to come back on? If so, is there a way to not have that happen and still have a screen saver, and auto on/off functionality through the Roku remote?

  • Thank you for your tips.  I ended up disabling the screen saver and I haven't had any trouble since.  There may be something that needs to change in the coding of the screen saver to make it so that its start-up doesn't trigger the CEC signal.

    Hellojoedaddio,

    Thanks for reaching out!

It seems you're having an issue with your TV that turns on suddenly with your Roku Premiere.

We're looking to gather more info.

    • Which remote do you use to turn your TV on or off?
    • What appears on your TV screen when it turns on? Is it the Home screen or the screensaver?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

    Please keep us posted.

I have used both the Roku remote and the one that came with my TV.  When using the Roku remote I push home, then over and up to the power option.

I have seen both the screen saver and the Roku City built-in screen saver when I find the TV on.  I don't know if something else is happening, but usually the Roku City is on for about half an hour, then the screen saver with nature photos comes on.

I have tried restarting the Roku by the menu option, and by unplugging it and plugging it back in.  Other than that, I haven't tried any other troubleshooting things.

It seems to me that the Roku is sending a "turn on" signal through its CEC commands. It may be that the screen saver or other option is telling the Roku that a video is starting, causing it to send a signal to the tv to either turn on or switch inputs to the Roku.  I may be wrong, but this seems likely.

Short of turning off CEC and using separate remotes, is there a way to limit this signal so that it only sends with user input?

Try disabling Roku's 1-touch Play feature under Settings/System/Control other Devices/1-touch play.

The above HDMI CEC setting allows user to simulataneously turn on the TV, switch to the HDMI port occupied by the Roku device, and wake the Roku device by pressing any button on the Roku remote (other than the volume and power buttons).

Sometimes other remotes and nearby appliances may interfere with this feature by triggering it.  If the issue persists after disabling this feature, then you may just be getting an errant IR signal that is triggerig the Roku device, but I would start by disabling the 1-touch play (if enabled) and see if that helps.
