Roku Express not detecting wifi

That’s it. I can’t use my roku express because it doesn’t detect a network.image.jpg

  • First suggestion is to reboot the wireless router, of course. The next thing to try is to change the channel the wireless radio is using. Your Express is not dual band, so the 2.4 GHz radio is the only one that needs changing. If you're currently on a mid channel (around 5-6), change it to one end of the other. If you're at one end, try the middle or the other end.

Also, at the frequencies that WiFi operates on, moving the Roku as little as a few inches could make a difference it reception.

  • Hi everyone,

In addition to the troubleshooting steps that renojim has provided, I would recommend checking out our Support page for troubleshooting issues here: What should I do if I cannot connect to my home network or the internet?

Please answer the following questions so we can get a better understanding of what you are seeing:
    - Have you ensured your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the device to connect to? The Roku Express is only compatible with wireless b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
    - Have you tried changing the wireless broadcast channel on the router to see if this will allow your device to connect?
    - Have you tried moving the device closer to your router to see if you can get connected?
    - How long have you been experiencing this problem?

If those things still aren't helping, feel free to send me a PM with your Roku account email address and the serial number of your Roku from Settings>System>About along with the answers to the above questions and I'll be able to assist you further from there.

    Thanks,
    Danny

I have restarted both the Roku device and the router. Still no detection of wifi. Wifi is working because computer and phone do not have any issues connecting.

I have the SAME PROBLEM.  Why isn't anyone helping to fix this issue at Roku??  Verizon FiOS recently put out 5G power to everything.  I figure this probably has something to do with not being able to get into Roku?  A user said "Do not reboot your router??"  What other choice do I have - no one is helping correct this issue!

I have the same issue and kind of figured out that changing 2.4 wifi's channel makes Roku detect it again. My question is - this seems like a bug and should be fixed. Is there anyone on this forum who knows if Roku is planning to fix this? It is very irritating.

Roku never announces what they are working on or anything that might be coming in a future release. It would be nice to know that they are at least working on it.

OK, if it sees your phone then the WiFi is working. Now the troubleshooting is with your router/access point. Assuming you have a Roku Express, that's only 2.4 GHz, so we'll concentrate there. First, there are 14 channels in the 2.4 GHz band, but Roku only works on eleven of them. And since there are only three channels that don't overlap each other, the best channels to use are 1, 6 or 11. Next, you need to check the mode your 2.4 radio is set to. There are three general modes for 2.4 GHz, B, G and N. Some ISPs have been configuring the radio to only use G and N, which in theory Roku should use just fine. But for whatever reason, there is some hardware out there that simply won't work with Roku unless the mode is set to B/G/N. Note: if your ISP has rented you the modem/router, they might not let you make these changes. You will have to contact your ISP and ask them to make the changes.

Next: do you have a cordless home phone? Many of them operate in the same 2.4 GHz band, and can interfere with WiFi reception. Make sure your cordless phone is not placed near the Roku, nor should the base unit be close to the Roku location.

My Roku Express was working fine then one day it just stopped.  It can see all the WLANs in the neighborhood but the SSID in my home, where the signal is strongest.  I've done all the reset, unplugs & nothing...Every other device that I have connects w/o issue.  This includes phones, tablets, printers, laptops, etc.  It  can even see the new WLAN printer I installed yesterday

I put on my Network Admin hat and started troubleshooting.  Nothing has worked!  I tested different router settings, evrn though nothing changed before the loss of connection.   1) signal strength up and down  2) signal gain  3)  B, G &/or Mixed   4)  Changed the broadcast channel  5)  adjusted the the broadcast channel width, narrow to wide band  5) moved the roku device.

There is no logical reason that I can find for the devices behavior.   Unless the auto-update ran and that broke it.   After resetting  to factory default it connects to my phone wifi and let me re-activate and set it up.  ... but it still will not see my home wifi.

If I didn't know better I'd say my Local WLAN has been blocked/blacklisted by the device.

I am with you. I also did all the stuff that you mentioned. I believe this issue is hardware related. In my case, when I used the phone´s wifi I needed to put the phone a few inches from the device, yet it sees the hotspot with a very low intensity.

I read somewhere that these units run so hot that the internal wifi chip could be damaged in the long term. Mine runs between 158F to 185F (info from hidden menu) and it was always plugged into the outled since I bought it (3 years ago). But the strange thing is that it was working fine before the firmware update. Could be a coincidence. For the record, mine is a Roku Express+, the one that has rca A/V plugs

For Me this is now fixed.  After everything I did, including doing some trash talking about Roku I looked at my routers firmware.  It was almost 3 years old, from Dec of 2017, DD-WRT v3.0-r34311.  I looked up the latest version, on https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2.  For my Linksys WRT1900AC v2, it is v3.0-r40559.  I downloaded & graded my WRT1900AC.   It restarted to the upgraded FW, no runs, no drips & no errors.

I turned on the Roku, it booted and there was my WLAN.  Moral of the story, for me, anyways ...  Do your homework and cover all the options, including the ones where it your own fault too.  I did not check to see which previous versions of DD-WRT worked, the latest does and I'm happy.  Had I kept my router updated more, would this still have happened?  IDK, but it you have any open source router I'd suggest upgrading to the latest stable version.

      Have a Great Thanksgiving everyone!!

I have tried everything I can think of. Just randomly both my rokus will not see my 2.4ghz wifi. I have tried every channel. I have updated firmware, I switched to OpenWRT for my WRT 32X router....nothing. Everything else finds the network just fine. This has to be a problem with an update or something. It worked fine for over a year, and my new roku worked fine for months. It can find all my neighbors wifis, just not mine.

I have also tried just opening my wifi with a MAC filter. Also tried manually adding the network to the roku, doesn't work. Unless my apt building filled my walls with lead over night, this is a software issue on roku.

You can't change the WiFi frequency band. The Express only works in the 2.4 GHz band. What you can change is the channel, which makes a minor frequency change within the 2.4 GHz band.

In this day and age, you should see numerous neighboring WiFi access points. If your Roku is showing absolutely none, there's likely a hardware or software issue with the Roku. Can you try using a hotspot on a phone and see if that can be seen?

Very frustrating.  Phoned Roku support line for this same issue.  Purchased 3 Roku Premieres because I like Roku.  Replaced one with the Premier, no problem.  Added one, no problem.  Downloaded "Roku - Official Remote" for iPhone.  Still everything working.  All of the sudden the two new Rokus and another on the same network all stop working.  None of the three can find the network and all three areas are getting the same signal that has been working for years.  Got a recording on Roku # 1 (816) 272-8107 saying no support due to Covid-19.  Been through all the support articles I can find.  NOTHING.  I can't even find an email address for Roku support.  It's shameful.

If your Roku is not seeing your 2.4GHz network, check your router and disable the legacy 802.11b rates.  As soon as I disabled it on mine, all my Rokus can now see my network without any issues.  Also, the streaming through my network from laptops, etc are now all working great.

Has anyone found an answer to this? Roku is useless - you tell them what you have done - which in my case was 90% of what they would ask for - even though i stated it in the ticket.

8 emails later - they are still asking or questions that I have already given them the info on.

They don want to bother replacing a defective item.

One would think that there are many people having this issue that Roku would be more open to digging out it.

Well - no other options - they wont replace it - so buy from another manufacturer that will support their products.

My Roku Express + that I've had for a year has suddenly started disconnecting from Wifi every single morning.  It does not reconnect unless I do a reset or unplug the unit from the power cord for a minute.  After a reset, it connects and I can proceed on with my day with no issues until the next morning when I have to unplug it for a minute again.  My Roku Streaming stick does not have the issue, and none of the other items in my home have wifi connection issues (Nintendo Switch, iPad, work laptop, home laptop, iPhone).  The Express+ unit has been in the same spot for over a year and is actually about 12 feet from my router.  Because this is a new issue, it seems that there must have been an update or something that makes this one device not connect to wifi unless it's reset.  Oh, and I've checked for software updates too.

I feel for the other people experiencing this.  Trust me, I understand!

        Hey HumorMike

Thanks for letting us know about the issue you're experiencing.

Could you tell us if you are getting an error code or message? Refer to this link for common Roku error codes and their recommended actions: What should I do if I cannot connect to my home network or the internet?

Furthermore, please be advised that your Roku Express+ (3910RW) is only compatible with wireless b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Ensure that your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the device to connect to.

        Please keep us posted!

        All the best,
        Kariza

Mtk7782 While you haven't changed anything, your wireless might have made changes you are not aware of. If your ISP controls your router, they might have disabled 2.4 GHz. For some strange reason some ISPs have been doing that without notifying the users, or hiding it within some sort of marketing mailing or email. By default most routers are also set to auto-select the channel they use for WiFi. On the 2.4 GHz band, the available channels are 1-14. However, Roku devices will only work on channels 1-11, so if your router changed itself to 12, 13 or 14, your Roku will not be able to see or connect to it.

So, check your router and see if a) 2.4 GHz is enabled and b) change the channel from Auto to channel 1, 6 or 11 (those are the three best channels to use on 2.4 GHz).

Your other two Roku devices might support 5 GHz, so if your ISP turned 2.4 GHz off they would still see and connect to the 5 GHz radio. That would explain why they still work.
