Roku express no longer finds or connects to wifi

I have 2 roku express devices.
it’s been working flawlessly on my network for months. Last week they stopped being connected to the Wi-Fi, and CAN’T find the Wi-Fi anymore. Every other device I have in the house, including my Roku tv, are connected and working fine, just not the Roku express anymore. I confirmed with my router and the isp that no firmware updates were pushed to my router. The Roku express will connect to the mobile hotspot on my phone and work that way, but not the house Wi-Fi. I’ve done all the things: reboot, hard reset, factory reset, same with the router. We even tuned off the 5ghz band and only ran 2.4ghz, and it STILL won’t work. As far as I can tell, this issue occurred after Roku’s latest update to my Roku express devices. Any thoughts?  The Roku website wouldn’t let me speak directly to an agent since it’s an express.

    Hi siggyiggy

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community!

Could you tell us who is your internet service provider? You can also try configuring your router and use wireless channels 1, 6, or 11 which are the preferred channels in North America. Each time you change the wireless channel, you will likely need to apply/save changes before you are prompted to restart the router.

If the issue persists, reply here with the serial number of your 2 Roku Express. This can be found by navigating to Settings > System > About

    Keep us posted.

    All the best,
    Kariza

Tried those channels and it still doesnt work. We have Wisper internet. Again, the Roku express worked just fine for months with no issues, then suddenly doesn’t work.

      serial number:

      X004006mjcn8

When I read that people have actually reconfigured their router and still have the same problem I a become even angrier.  Hasn’t Roku ever heard of error handling coding?

  • My power went out the other day and my Roku will not connect to my router/wifi. It brings up all my neighbors wifi connections but not mine. I have tried everything numerous times and it still doesn't work. I called my ISP, the wifi popped up on the list. But would not connect. Then, they proceed with other avenues, and nothing.  The wifi doesn't show up anymore on the Roku.

  • First, try forgetting the Wi-Fi network on the Roku express devices and then reconnecting to it. To do this, go to Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless > Scan again to find your network > Select your network > Enter your Wi-Fi password.

If that doesn't work, try changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router. It's possible that there is interference on the current channel that is preventing the Roku devices from connecting. You can usually do this in your router's settings.

Another thing to try is to disable any firewall or security software on your router temporarily and see if the Roku devices can connect! If they can, then you may need to adjust your router's settings to allow the Roku devices to connect.

Finally, if none of these solutions work, it's possible that the latest Roku update caused the issue. You may need to wait for a new update or contact Roku support directly to see if they have a solution.

    I hope this helps!

You appear to have done all possible on your end to troubleshoot the problem. Because the Roku Express devices can connect to your mobile hotspot but not to your home WiFi network, it's likely that they're incompatible with your router or that there's a compatibility issue between the devices and your Wi-Fi network.

You could try contacting Roku customer service through their website or social media channels to see if they can help you further. They might be able to provide further troubleshooting methods or forward the problem to their engineering team for further examination. If the problem cannot be fixed, they may be able to provide a replacement device.

  • Same thing is happening with mine!! We have alta fiber and 4 different roku devices, now all rendered useless. Absolute bullsh** roku!!!

      Hi clou3,

Thanks for your first post in the Roku Community!

We appreciate your feedback and we’re sorry you're having trouble with connecting your home network. We want to ensure that our customers have the best streaming experience.

We would recommend checking out our Support page for troubleshooting issues here: How to connect your Roku streaming device to the internet using Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Official Roku Support

Please answer the following questions so we can get a better understanding of what you are seeing:

      • When did this issue first start occurring?
      • Do you receive any error codes or messages? If yes, please let us know.
      • Have you ensured your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for the device to connect to? The Roku Premiere or Roku Express is only compatible with wireless b/g/n networks on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
      • Have you tried changing the wireless broadcast channel on the router to see if this will allow your device to connect?
      • Does connecting to a wireless Hotspot fix?
      • Have you tried moving the device closer to your router to see if you can get connected?

Please keep us posted and we'll continue assisting you from there.

      Best regards,
      Mary

What are the model numbers of your Express devices?  Can be found under Settings/System/About on your device.

Also provide your ISP (internet service provider) and router model number.

Likely you are just going to have to make some changes/configurations to your router settings and hopefully be back and running.

  • I worked for two days doing EVERYTHING To solve this problem; even bought a Roku Express, but had the same problem. I couldn't do a factory reset, as it kept looping back to opening. You can't get to settings on the ROKU screen, obviously.

As a last resort, I used a paper clip to press the reset on the receiver. Open up the clip and insert the pointy end in the tiny hole, hardly visible on the same side as the USB and HDMI openings. Hold for 5-10 seconds!

    Voila! In business!
