Roku Express loop restart with software update

Everything was working great but I wanted to check for updates to make sure I was on the latest.  So I manually went into system settings and had the system check for updates.  Well, it found an update, downloaded it and then indicated that it was going to restart.  When it restarted, the Roku logo appeared and then the device shut down.  I restarted it several times and the same thing.  So then I tried doing a factory reset.  All was fine except now it wants to download the update.  It downloads the same update, appears to install it and then does a reboot after which it won't stay running.  Over and over and over and over and over again.  Endless loop.  I am so disappointed!  Everything was working and now this!

  • zublerr  This post is 2 years old. Exactly which Roku model do you own? Which Roku OS version are you running? How long ago did you purchase your Roku?

Well, the original post is over 2 years old, but there are other people experiencing the same issue that posted in 2021.

I have a Roku Express, maybe a couple years old.  Can't tell you the OS version since it won't get to any point where I could look it up.  Model:  3900X.

If you are updating to OS 11, there may be a bug in the release that is causing your issue.

Tagging RokuDanny-R so that he can help you personally.

Go online to https://my.roku.com/account and near bottom of page, make a note of your model number and serial number which is probably what will be requested of you.

They will be able to get you back up and running.

    Thanks for the post.

Have you already tried performing a factory reset on your Roku device by pressing and holding down the reset button on your Roku device for at least 30 seconds regardless of what happens on screen?

In addition, we would recommend to make sure the Roku device is being plugged into a wall outlet as opposed to plugged into the TV USB port.

As a last troubleshooting step, when checking for an update, we would recommend trying to connect to an alternate wireless network, such as a mobile hotspot, to see if you are still experiencing an issue.

Please keep us posted what you find out and we will be able to assist you further.

    Thanks,
    Danny

       Hi, Danny

Same problem, here. Already tried factory reset pressing and holding the reset button for at least 30s.

Tried to plug the device into a wall outlet although it always worked plugged into the TV USB.

Tried to use my mobile hotspot as wireless network.

The problem started with the software version 11.x (it was running 10.5.x).

Now it always initialize with the "Let's get started", I choose my language, setup my network (my router or my hotspot), it connects, show a message that are an update avaiable, show the updating software popup, make it do 100%, ask to do not turn ok my tv, reboot it self and go to "Let's get started" again and again and again....

        Thanks for the post.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, can you please provide the serial number/device ID on your Roku device? I'll be able to assist you further from there.

        Thanks,
        Danny

  • Happened to me too. I just kept 'updating' it through the loop (~ 6 times) . Eventually, it worked; the update stayed in! (Perhaps there were just many updates to do).
