Roku App Private listening keeps disconnecting

There wasn’t really a recent post on this so I wanted to create a new one summarizing how I fixed the issue of the Roku apps audio disconnecting constantly when using private listening.

To start. I tried everything from disabling notifications to marking sure both me and the Roku stick were on the same WI-FI connection. I even tried building a new WIFI network to see if isolating them made any difference.  Nothing worked. Not even a little.

This is what finally worked. I noticed just by chance that my iPhone would routinely query my cell provider. It just happens behind the scenes and does this on all phones. That query coincided with my disconnects.

1. I put my phone in airplane mode but then re-enabled WI-FI. Did not have a single disconnect the rest of the night or when using it the next day.

2. So I didn't have to go into airplane mode each time I drilled into the ROKU app settings on the iPhone (see screenshot). Once there disable cellular data. Your basically making the ROKU app only work over WI-FI. This is NOT in the settings within the ROKU app. That made it where I never have to go into airplane mode again. It’s been working perfectly for 3 weeks so far on both my iPhone and Android.

As an update to my post. Last night, after 3 weeks of solid performance it started cutting out again. My setup at the time was 'cellular data' switch was disabled and the phone was NOT in airplane mode. I had done an IOS update two days prior so maybe that screwed with it. After fiddling with it for a while what I finally did to make it stable again was to re-enable the 'cellular data' switch and put the phone fully into airplane mode (disabled WIFI also), then turn on WIFI again. Basically I did what I described in #1 from my first post. That worked for the rest of the night.

One additional thing I noticed while doing all this is that if you pay attention, when the audio starts cutting out my Roku app also briefly looses connection to the ROKU and I can no longer control it (like hitting pause). It's not due to WIFI strength or instability.
