Photo Streams Screensaver Only Showing Most Recent Photos

I have a very large photo library (4000+, 6 selected albums, 9 total) and Photo Streams was working fine until a week ago, when the screensaver has since appeared to only be selecting photos from the amongst the most recent 40 in each album (coincidentally, the same number that appears in the preview scrolls on the app's main page).

I decided to deselect all but one album, featuring 300+ images, but the screensaver only displayed the most recent 100 photos in it. I can still access and view all photos and albums, and the problem is the same on both Rokus (4800X, 3811X)—before and after the most recent update.

  • Why does my photo streams Screensaver only show only some of my photos?  I have 1000 photos but it only ever shows maybe 200. The rest i never see!! Why isn't there more settings available to customize and adjust?  Why does it seem to be stuck only ever showing the same handful of photos

        To The Moderators:

Any update on the ongoings of the situation? Around four months have passed since the issue has occurred, but little seems to have changed or been addressed.

Additionally, could we also be made privy to the limits of how many photos and albums we can have? For example, I was under the impression that 10 albums were the limit, but going by user WantItToWork's experiment, that is not the case.

  • Has there been an updated fix to the photo stream issue?  I have removed the app, shutdown Roku, and reinstalled the app numerous times.  Nothing works.  Please help.

Is this issue being worked on? It's been a few months since some of us first messaged. Thanks for your time.

  • Dear community,

My roku photo stream only shows the last 90 photos I uploaded out of 243 photos.  I have tried removing the photo stream tile, restarting roku, restarting my tv, and putting the tile back on there, several times.  I have also checked for updates.

        Hey, Mickster40.

        Great to see you here!

Looks like you're having some trouble getting all your photos to show up on Roku Photo Streams.

Thanks for sharing the details! We'll definitely pass this along to the team and look into it.

We'll keep you in the loop, so stay tuned!

  • As many of you have written (and for sure Roku staff have seen the posts), there are bugs and unstated limits inherent in using your own photos as a screensaver. When uploading photos directly to Roku (not using Google Photos), the limit was 100 photos per album with an unstated limit for the number of albums then the limit was changed to 1000 photos per album. I have now stressed the limits using both direct uploads to Roku and Google photo albums and tried to decipher what their software is doing when it tries to select which photos to display. Perhaps others have done this and could share their experiences and maybe we can zero in on how this actually works. Or, Roku could just tell us (IMAGINE THAT!)

I have uploaded as many as 6000 photos directly to Roku in collections of 100. The randomizer is poor - it selects only a subset of photos and then just shows them in a looped sequence and often repeats the same subset and many photos available are never selected. And when they changed the limit to 1000 photos per collection, the randomizing software more or less broke and started exhibiting a recency bias only showing a subset of the most recently uploaded photos.

When they upped the limit to 1000, I wanted to change to having the 6000 photos in 6 collections of 1000 instead of 60 collections of 100 but killing it all off and uploading 6000 photos again in batches of 20 (C'mon Roku!) was just too much of a task just to see what set of bugs that would expose. So I linked to Google Photos where I could upload 1000 photos at a time and started linking albums to Roku to see if it would work any better. I also labeled all my photos with text so I know which album they are in and where in the 1000 they are so when they are displayed I get a bit of information about how the randomizing algorithm works. Here are the conditions I created and the outcomes I observed so far:

    - I had about 10000 photos stored in Google Photos and made 10 albums with just under 1000 photos in each. If I linked all 10 albums to Roku, when the screensaver kicked in it would somewhat randomly pick a subset (3?) of the 10 and show photos from just that subset. Not too bad if it displays randomly from the 3000 photos available in the chosen albums and then next time it picks a different subset. But it does nothing like this. It will "reach" only about 40 photos deep into the selected albums and then loop through the same ones repeatedly. So only the first pictures in each album are even eligible to be selected and the remaining 960 photos in each album are never shown.

    - So I wondered if there was only one album of 1000 photos for it to show from would it show those 1000 pictures randomly. So I removed 9 of the albums from the link to Roku and showed only pictures from one album. It "reached" a little deeper into this album but still chose only from about the first 90 photos and the remaining 910 were never displayed.

    - Since it was choosing only a small number of photos from the "front" of any given album I wondered what would happen if I changed it to 100 albums of 100 photos each. There I ran into interesting (and undocumented) limits. If there are more that 50 Google Photos albums, when you try to link them to Roku, only the first 50 show up. Any additional albums in Google Photos are not available to be chosen. And then if you link all 50, the PhotoStreams app itself will only see 25.

    - With 25 albums you still can't get 2500 photos to show randomly - once again it "reaches" only about 40 photos deep into each one and it shows the same subset often and leaves most of the linked photos out entirely never showing them.

These are tentative conclusions but I think the best you can do at this point is to have 1000 photos in 25 albums of 40 photos each. Each time the screensaver kicks in it will show only a subset and it appears to repeat the same subset often. I think many of the 1000 will never be shown but at this point this is my best guess as to how to get the most photos randomly displayed.

I doubt anyone else has tinkered with this to this extent but if anyone has knowledge to share that might be helpful, please reply with your experience and insights. As for Roku bots or employees crawling the forum and reading this - here is what we don't need:

    - to be told to reboot our device

    - to be told to provide serial numbers

    - to be told to send you a photo of the error message

    - to be told that you need more information

And here is what we do need:

    - to be told how the randomizing and selection algorithm works

    - to be told the limits and how to optimize within the limits

    - or even better - to have our Roku devices updated with software that actually randomly displays from ALL the pictures we make available

WantItToWork, coincidentally I just went through this testing after becoming frustrated at the Photo Streams Screensaver omitting pics from a slideshow I was building.

The 'gist is that the Photo Streams Screensaver (distinct from its Slideshow) will only pull images from the 20 most recently enabled streams, with a max of 5 streams selected randomly from among the 20. Further, the image selection depth (how far image selection will dive beyond the last image within a given stream) is 100 for a single enabled stream, and (200 / # of selected streams) otherwise.

      Probably simplest to illustrate...

(Random stream selection also demo'd in this Google Sheets spreadsheet.)

      Changes/fixes needed include...

      • Randomly selecting just 5 active streams is probably OK, but no reason to limit the scope to just the 20 most recently enabled streams.

      • Per stream image selection depth would ideally be eliminated, allowing random selection from the entire range of available images for each stream.

      • Limiting a slideshow instance to just 100 (or some other limit>= 100)  is probably OK, if it's a resource issue, but an alternative fix would be to allow a configuration option to trigger the Photo Streams Screensaver to reinitialize after a set number of slideshow passes complete, avoiding a single set of 100 slides cycling endlessly.

p.s. Google Photos albums and Sheets spreadsheet used for the testing are available, if needed.

A bit more of the same, detailing the image selection depth limitations in table form ... plus tabulating the "orphaned" image count were each stream filled to capacity w/ 1000 images.

      Thank you for doing this....

My assumption was similar and it is certainly not the the device but the algorithm.

      Anyone listening at Roku!

  • I have this same problem. The screensaver will only cycle a portion of the photos from the stream. Out of 305 photos in one stream, about 30 will actually show up. I have followed the instructions to no avail. Sometimes I will switch it off and restart and still have the same problem, but it will be 25-30 different photos it cycles through that day. It is never the full catalog of photos included in that stream.

I’m having the same issue! Looks like this problem has been reported for two years and there is STILL no resolution! Why doesn’t Roku either fix it or clearly state only 25-40 photos can be used. So incredibly frustrating to be fighting with this only to find it’s been an ongoing issue for TWO YEARS! Come on, do better!! And no, I’m not going to bother with providing all my Roku info as I can see from prior posts that it would be yet another waste of time.

  • Same issue here as well.  Started sometime in December 2024.  Really hope this gets resolved as this was one of my favorite features of Roku.

Photo stream doesn’t show all photos. I uninstalled app, restarted device muliple times. Still doesn’t display all photos. Just displays first 75. Do you have a way to fix this? Or is the product defective?

The problem has been going on for roughly a month now and likely isn't device-related. As far as I can tell, the screensaver, which loops 100 random photos, is displaying only the most recent 100 photos from within a single-album selection and 40 from each album within a multi-album selection.

They have no intention of fixing it, it's beyond ridiculous it isn't rocket science digital picture frames have been out for over 10 years. Basically the same algorithm just show one picture at a time for so many seconds wow.

  • Got here via google to see if anyone else was having the same problem. We have one photo stream with about 700 photos in it and we're only seeing those first forty or so. The problem started in mid-December for us and it's driving us crazy.

What a joke. Just pull the stupid app you have no intention of updating this is ridiculous. You people are a bunch of phonies.

  • Photoview AND Roku Stream can’t access google photo albums since 12/16/24?
IF you set Photoview to an album and then preview it, Roku does a restart reboot, THEN can only display all your google photos instead of specific albums.
IF you use Roku Stream (never used it before this issue) it can’t access Google photos. After clicking create, it has a disclaimer page, x out of this and you get a FAST (fraction of a second) error message stating can’t verify? Too fast to screen capture and send to Roku support!

Roku tech support is terrible, they disconnected my hour waiting chat and I don’t want to do that again. Since this a very recent BUG, I will give it time to fix. Using other screensavers till then.
