Passing HDMI audio to AVR

Attempting to use my AVR for the Roku audio. Have the soundbar, but I prefer to use my audio system. Do not like using the sound bar for listening, hard of hearing. Besides, I am picky when it comes to audio.

Have the HDMI cable connected to the HDCP 2.2 inputs, but do not get any audio signal pass through. Using the optical output to feed my disk recorder for music from my digital library. This is the way I prefer my setup to be. If I can not do it this way with the soundbar setup, then I will get rid of it and go back to an Ultra device.

There are no settings in the Roku for using an AVR. You connect the HDMI output from the Roku to an AVR HDMI input, then the AVR outputs the video to the TV and plays the audio through the AVR's speaker system. Depending on the Roku player model, your audio settings should either be on Auto, or if the Passthrough setting is available use that one.

Ah, I think I misunderstood. You don't have a stand-alone Roku player, but instead a Roku Soundbar with a Roku player built in. In that case, you have no way to get the Roku sound into an AVR. Since it's built into a soundbar, it has no audio output capability. All sound is processed by the soundbar itself. The HDMI port is only for sending the Roku's video output to the TV.

  • Always helpful to know the Roku model number, firmware version, TV brand/model, AVR brand/ model etc. Make sure you're using the ARC HDMI input on the TV and ensure you're using the proper Roku Audio settings which are best when you select Pass Through and Automatic for Dolby format

Using Model 9101R2-Roku Streamer Pro, Software version 14.1.4 Build 7709, no firmware designation. Connected to a Denon AVR-S504BT, with an LG webOS TVUN7300AUD, webOS version 5.6.0-1001 (jhericurl-jimna). TV HDMI connected to AVR DHCP 2.2 input.

      Hope this helps

  • You haven't said much about how things are hooked up.

I just do a simple [all input devices] -> AVR -> speakers and TV.  (No Arc in use.)

That works fine since I don't use OTA TV.  If you do use OTA, you'll need ARC or optical.

jontalk, are you referring AVR audio settings or Roku audio settings? I think you are discussing the AVR audio setting, as there are no such settings in Roku.
