OS 12.5 beginning rollout

It looks like OS 12.5 is beginning to roll out.

Roku OS 12.5

Initial rollout date: September 12, 2023

Roku OS 12.5 includes new APIs for monitoring the current amount of available memory for a channel and getting the device user agent. This release also includes features that generally enhance the performance of media playback such as prebuffering for live content, improved closed captioning through ad breaks, and pre-playback audio and subtitle track selection

  • Ok. On my TCL TV, Roku OS 10 broke CEC volume control. It finally fixed it in Roku OS 12 after 2 years. And now, 12.5 (build 4175) just broke it again! And now it seems like it’s not just volume - no control via CEC whatsoever (eg receiver doesn’t power and volume control doesn’t work). Guys, this is ludicrous. Find out what you are doing in the code base and test it out. I’m soon going to be done with Roku OS. I’ve waited years for you guys to fix bugs and now you just reintroduced it.

I have a Roku Ultra (2022 model) 4802, and for the most part, it's been working as it should, had a few strange remote issues yesterday and it's the voice remote pro (non replaceable batteries)

The navigation was erratic, and volume was spotty, so pressed paring button to re-pair and that seems to have fixed the navigation, and I disabled the idle sleep function, so the Roku now simply goes into screen saver mode vs turning off after 20 minutes and this also seems to help keep it stable.

When it works, Roku devices typically work well, without much issue.  I've never owned a Roku TV.  I typically advise people to keep the TV and smart devices separate, but it's getting much harder to do that today.  Normally I would suggest to someone to buy a dumb TV, and any smart devices you want, buy separately so if you DO encounter problems, "such as you have" it won't affect everything.  In this case it sounds like this problem not only affects the Roku aspect of the TV, but anything else you want to do with it as well.

      Hi ryeguy_24,

      Thanks for the post!

We're sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate your feedback about this. Could you share with us the device serial number of your TCL TV that has an issue. We'd like to take a close look.

We'll look forward to your update. Thanks!

      Regards,

      Rey

  • Didn't realize it was  scheduled for September.  I just got the update yesterday, and then I heard Luke from Cord cutter's news mention it at the beginning of the week / end of last.  So thought by that, it was scheduled for October.  Anyway, overall, my Roku Ultra 4802 feels snappier after the update was installed and it sat overnight.  I tried some content this morning, and it was a really good experience.

For the past month or two, I have been using my Chromecast with Google TV more than the Roku though, mainly waiting on some issues with Roku to be resolved, and I like the Google TV interface better in some ways over the Roku.  However, with that said, all the issues I was having with my Roku (except 1) have been resolved, so it seems to be stable again, and the one remaining, is channel related, and not Roku at this point.  So, it's pretty usable again.

  • I just got this update and my TCL Tv with Roku Express + is now unusable for streaming. At 11:30am it was fine. I turned off the TV to nap and when I turned it back on it had updated and doesn’t work. It changes my hdmi2 (where Roku is plugged in) to something called DVI. The Roku screen is pink, smaller than normal, and there is no sound.

      Hi azponyrider,

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

Can you confirm your device's current OS by going to Settings under the System option? Also, for the audio issue, kindly try to reboot the device by performing a system restart under settings and plug it into another available HDMI port.

      Please keep us posted.

      Regards,
      Janadee

Thank you for responding. Software version is 12.5.0 build is 4175-51 model of the Roku express+ is 3910rw  I have rebooted it multiple times. I have exchanged hdmi cables. I have tried hdmi ports 1,2 (where it normally goes), and 3. I have unplugged it for 10 minutes, plugged it back in and restarted. It was working perfectly just an hour before the update. After the update the Roku screen is pink, small, and there is no sound. I set it to hdmi and it switches itself to dvi. The television is a TCL. I have video of it changing itself from hdmi to dvi and a photo of the pink screen if that will help.

  • RokuJanadeeK does my Roku player automatically update to the new iOS 12.5 or do I have to go through and look for it? I may have set it up for automatic updates if that’s a thing I’m not sure if I did I’ve had my TCL Roku TV for a few years now.

Thanks for posting here in the Roku Community, Dfresh567.

If you haven't seen any changes in your Roku streaming device yet, kindly try to manually check for any system updates by navigating to your Home screen. Scroll up or down to select Settings > System > System update > Check Now. It may be possible that it isn't available on your device yet, but you can check it from time to time.

Let us know if there's anything else we can be of assistance with. We'd be more than happy to continue doing so.

      Kind regards,
      Carly

  • Could this be why my screen on a TCL Roku TV has turned black? It will flash when turned on, the screen will show up for a moment, go off, come back on for a moment, and then the screen goes black again. I am not able to go to a settings screen. I have tried the reset button on the back of the tv, but it never takes me to the recovery screen.

    Model No 32S305

    Serial No. 1805GTC002840AQ1365

I had the update to 12.5.0 build 4178 yesterday on my Roku Express HD, and it has messed things up:

The Express does not appear to know what the TV resolution is when the Roku Express is in its faulty state, and outputs HDMI which my 1080p Panasonic TV cannot display properly - horizontal jitter enough to make the whole picture look a bit blurred at normal viewing distance, and occasionally a black bar at the top of the picture.

A software reset of the Express gets thing back to normal for a while (still early days, but will update if anything I haven't mentioned happens).

Advanced display settings/system/Advanced system settings/Advanced display settings/auto-adjust display refresh rate

is still set to ON (has been on since I initially set it up 8 months ago.)

      In settings/display type / auto.

There is a warning "Unable to detect the TV's resolution" on screen while the fault is present while in the "display type" menu setting.

      Any ideas or comments?

On 12.5 I can't get my TCL R655 to recognize USB drives.

For example, my main flash drive worked fine until 12.5 rolled out. I've tried reformatting it as NTFS then back to exFAT.

The drive flashes when plugged in (it's getting power) but the TV doesn't recognize it at all.

I've also tried pulling power from the TV, waiting, and powering it back on.

The flash drive works in multiple other devices, and worked fine on this TV until recently.

I've seen similar reports from others across the web. I think 12.5 (or something else recent) broke USB device support on some Roku devices.

  • My TCL Roku TV just completed the 12.5 update yesterday - and now every picture display has maximum motion smoothing. Even when I turn off all motion smoothing options in the "expert settings", my display is unchanged. Everything looks like an episode of Days of Our Lives. It is unwatchable - considering getting rid of the TV if this problem persists.

      Hi kjg25,

Thanks for sharing the experience you've had with this issue.

May we know if the issue occurs with your other device as well? Also, have you already tried performing a system restart on your device?

      Please keep us updated.

      Regards,
      Janadee

Soul_Journey, if you're using the TV's USB port for power, try using the supplied power adapter.  If you're already doing that, it doesn't hurt to try a different one and/or a different USB cable.
