Onn Roku TV unfamiliar VPN APP

I noticed on my Roku TV an APP called 'VPN TV' and I've searched every possible nook and cranny of the internet and nobody knows what it is, as far as searches go, it's not an app, but a gateway to 3rd party VPN services, that you have to choose when its started, but all it does when it's started is ask for login and password, to where?  I've tried a VPN auth KEY, using the creds from my ProtonVPN API details, and it says invalid login, I tried the login for my VPN account, and it says invalid login.

Does anyone know what the heck this app is?  And why there's nothing about it anywhere, it obviously comes from Roku, otherwise it wouldn't be in the list of apps to download, and the TV is a Roku ONLY TV not Android, so there's no settings to download from unknown sources.

  • Tezzy It might have been Onn's attempt at making an app to interface with their server or their attempt to create a VPN, before realizing that there are issues with VPNs and Roku streaming.

I have the same questions. I found the app in a Roku search, but after I installed it, I didn't have log-in info.  I found what I think is the same service at https://vpn.tv/, but it's the same situation...I need to log in but there is no option to register.  What is it and why does Roku have it as an available app?

    Hi there! Tezzy

It looks like you've come across an unfamiliar app or third-party VPN service on your Roku called VPN TV. I tried checking on my end but couldn’t find any info about that app. If possible, could you share a quick photo so we can take a closer look? Just a heads-up: Roku doesn’t support installing VPN apps or third-party VPN services and Roku don’t have built-in VPN capabilities. We generally don’t recommend using VPNs as they can affect the security and stability of your device.

    Thanks!

Just a heads-up back: This app is in Roku's channel store:

Thanks for the heads up! Strega2

Even though Roku doesn’t recommend using VPNs, some developers still manage to get third-party apps on there. When I checked out the app, it looked more like a streaming service—so I’m guessing they might’ve just called it “VPN” for marketing, not because it’s an actual Virtual Private Network.

I’ll take a closer look once I have full access. Right now, I can’t replicate it, but I’ll keep you posted on what I find!

        Thanks again!
