old remote won't open up 'home'. can't activate new remote
Old remote turns on the TV but the 'home' button doesn't work I need to set up a new remote. What do I do?

We need more information, but assuming the old remote has a button on the back or inside the battery compartment press and hold the button until the light starts to flash and then disconnect the power from the Roku device for a few seconds and reconnect it.
