New remote. How do I get it to work?

New remote. No pairing button. No status light. How to I get it to work?

Using with a Roku Streaming Stick

  • ""....(i.e., it's not a voice remote) it won't work with a stick"....Thank you.

If that bit of information is on this site somewhere I could not find it.

If it's a simple remote with no TV controls and/or no microphone button (i.e., it's not a voice remote) it won't work with a stick.  If it is a voice remote, to put it into pairing mode you can simultaneously hold the Home and Back buttons (the two buttons next to each other at the top of the remote) for 5 seconds and the pairing light should start to flash.

It's there, but I don't think you'll find a statement that says, "if it's not a voice remote it won't work with sticks".  For the "simple" remote it states:

        "Compatible with

Most Roku players* and Roku audio devices.

Not compatible with Roku TV models.

        *Except Roku® Streaming Stick® models: 3821, 3820, 3811, 3810, 3800, 3600.
To check if your device is compatible, find your device model number."

If you compare remotes, there will also be a "compatibility" category with the same information.  There is a caveat:  there are very old remotes that are not voice remotes that will work with sticks.  However, for current remotes, it must be one of the voice remotes to work with a stick.

  • Can you post the exact model number of the remote and your Roku (settings/system/about)? The remote model number is usually inside the battery compartment.

I think the most basic Roku remote is IR (infrared) only and will NOT work with any stick models as it requires line-of-sight. You must use one that uses WiFi/RF. They may or may not have voice support.

Is this the replacement remote for this one? It seems like you may have replaced it with the same model. If you have an actual Stick (just one of Roku's models) then the most basic Roku IR remote (as well as most universal remotes) won't work with it. This is a potential drawback of "stick" models, but reasonable, since sticks are normally hidden behind TVs where IR won't reach.

Yes on me replacing my remote with the wrong type. Twice..!!  I've ordered the proper type now I hope.

Quick shipping is nice though. Thanks for your time
