Maximum number of streaming devices per account

It appears that the maximum number of streaming devices per account is 20 as I have hit the error stating such, and this was given as an answer to this question 14 years ago in this thread:

How many roku player can i link to one account | Roku Community

Do you think maybe it's time to up this number? I mean 20, it's not even an exponent? Seems like a very arbitrary and pretty pathetically low number. I have more than 30 Roku devices and have to separate some out to a different account due to this limitation. I mean I have a 3x3 video wall made up of 9 Roku TVs, which is then fed by another Roku streaming device across all 9 TVs. That alone is half of that limit in just one room.

In a world where a 43-55" 4K Roku TV is just about the cheapest thing of it's size that you can hang on a wall, even cheaper than a framed poster of a similar size, you'd think that this limitation would be run into pretty consistently. I have a Roku TV or streamer in every room in my house and multiples in some, that I remotely turn on and off dependent on whether a sensor identifies that there is someone in that room. It's pretty easy to hit that limit.

Usually smart devices have a limit of some impractically high number, 20 isn't even reasonably high. Maybe this seemed like a high number 15 years ago when Roku was just a separate streaming device and TVs cost considerably more than they do now, but in today's marketplace, it's just not a reasonable limit. Fairly large Roku TVs today cost less than an 8x10" video picture frame did 15 years ago.

  • Some apps will also restrict your device usage as well.

    Hi there! KenIrwin

    Thanks for your insights!

Yes, indeed! Currently, the maximum number of devices you can set up on an account is 20. This limit is intentional to prevent accounts from becoming too crowded, as one Roku subscription covers all 20 devices. However, I understand your point, and we appreciate your feedback. Thank you for your continued support of Roku and for helping us improve it even more!

    Cheers!

Too crowded for what, exactly? I truly fail to see where ANY consumer would welcome having to maintain multiple accounts so that each one could be a bit less cluttered. For the vast majority of your users, they are probably not even aware there is such a limit, but for users such as myself it's just a major annoyance that I can see no practical reason for, and the number of users like myself will only increase over time. While I can possibly understand why such a limit was imposed 15 years ago, 15 years is an eternity in consumer electronics. 15 years ago only about half of all households even had a broadband internet connection capable of streaming video over something like a Roku, today it's nearly universal. I mean 15 years ago you were competing with Blockbuster retail stores, and Netflix DVD by mail service.

When I bought my first Roku device, streaming devices were your only product. Now you have wandered into smart bulbs, security cameras, switches, doorbells and lighting. Do you impose similar limits on those type of devices? I am quite curious to be honest. I have more than 20 smart switches in my home, more than 20 security cameras, more than 10 times that number of smart bulbs, I have individual rooms with more smart bulbs than that. I mean I have that many IoT connected mini-split AC/Heat Pump units in my house each with it's own Ecobee thermostat. I've not had to split my devices across multiple accounts for any of those things.
