I'm having the same issue. Screen mirroring works but attempting to AirPlay from the QuickTime app itself just yields the AirPlay settings screen on my Roku TV. Both my laptop and TV are on the same wifi network. It's kind of a bummer because I'd like to use my Roku TV remote control with the media playback where possible.

Same problem here...
What gives, Roku? You sell this hardware as Airplay 2 compatible, yet this very basic function does not work.

Roku Streaming can be Solved with Plex!
I have streamed my video library to my living room with Plex server. It works fine. I have done it, and its not that tough to do. https://www.plex.tv
You can download the Plex app on your Roku, then on your Mac have your Plex account point to a folder holding video files inside of it. Just make sure Plex stays running on your Mac in the background. It works fine and I have done it dozens of times.
Granted some of you may not want to download something extra I can assure you it works fine...

Really helpful, thanks! Screen Mirroring worked, but was slow and unwatchably choppy, with something like 2fps. I also couldn't get AirPlay streaming to work, as described earlier in this thread. But Plex works very well with the Roku device installed on my laptop.

AirPlay issues with QuickTime are widespread, especially w/Non-Apple AirPlay receivers
Try AirPlay-mirroring via Control Center instead.
Or try another media player with access to the same files, and AirPlay-cast from that.
Since Apple codes the AirPlay functionality for both devices (Roku and your Apple device), you'll have better luck contacting them: https://support.apple.com/contact

For those wanting an AirPlay solution that is compatible with Roku, and is fairly inexpensive, look at the ElMedia Player Pro application for Mac. a single license is $20 USD. I have confirmed this works with Roku. They even mention Roku support specifically in the release notes for version 8.
For Info start here: https://www.elmedia-video-player.com
By default the player is free, but a Pro license must be purchased to unlock features such as AirPlay support as well as more. Hope this helps.
