How to get voice command on Roku remote to type your login email

How to get voice command on Roku remote to type my login email? 

I was able to dictate it when I first paired the remote but now when I press the microphone icon when say the email -  it says "thinking" and searches for a show instead of typing my email!

    Are you trying to enter it one letter at a time?  What channel/app are you trying to log into?
