How to fix TV that keeps turning on by itself

My TCL tv with built-in Roku keeps turning on by itself after we turn it off with the Roku app, this happens 2 or 3 times before it stops doing it. Has anyone experienced this? if you found a solution pls let me know.

  • Hey my tv was doing this yesterday. I went into the settings and found restart. So I restarted the tv and it hasn't happened since.

  • I discovered three solutions.

    1. After turning off tv with TCL remote I unplug the tv briefly. (Not a good solution)

    2. After turning off tv with TCL remote I remove the batteries from remote, briefly.(Better,  but not good solution)

    3. I downloaded the Roku Remote app and use that solved the problem. (Now I want TCL to replace this defective remote that came with the TV

  • I have found the app turns on the tv just by opening the app. It turns on whichever tv we last connected to via the app. This is very annoying if I want to control a different tv than the one I last connected to.

Try Settings/System/Control other devices.... make sure one touch play is disabled.

It is off. It has only started doing this since the app was updated.

  • We have the same issue. We live in an apartment where there is a line of sight to another apartment building out our living room window, so my theory is that somebody else with the same kind of remote in the other building can turn our TV on, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Short of covering the IR receiver and only using he phone app to control the TV, I'm not sure what the solution is -- IR remotes are all the same, there is no way to pair the remote and the TV so that only our remote can turn it off and on.

I have multiple Roku remotes. They seemed to be paired as they don’t control any tv but the one assigned.

I'm experiencing the same issue on the Roku Streambar, so it's not limited to the TCL tv alone if anyone was wondering

We had the same problem. The tv turned on around 3 am while we were asleep. Woke us up. This happened twice. We are in our own home with no line of sight from anywhere else so I think it's a command coming over the internet.

My TCL Roku TV (55") started turning on in the middle of the night as well a few weeks ago. It did it again last night, also at around 3am. In Settings->Sytem->System update I can see that it checked for an update at 3:13am. My theory right now is that the TV is turning on in the middle of the night to check for an update, not finding one, and then sitting on the home screen until it times out.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

  • Alexa or Siri may be the culprit.  I have another Roku connected to my Alexa but sometimes I am lazy and I say Alexa “turn on the tv” but nothing happens in the room I am in.  I quickly remember to say Alexa “turn the Master Bedroom Roku on and the tv comes on.  The days later I notice the tv is on in the other room.  I didn’t put it together until today when I decided to check to see if the tv was in fact connected to the Alexa. I said the command and went into the other room and sure enough the power came on.  Long Story Short Check your home automation.

Likewise if you use the roku app on your phone and have multiple devices, just selecting the wrong one will power it on even if you don't hit the power button.

Nope. Firstly, I don't have it on any other device, always use the remote. Secondly, we were asleep both times the TV connected to the Roku input (instead of cable), turned on and woke us up.

Don't have a Siri or Alexa or any other such device. I don't feel like connecting all my electronic devices--single point of failure and all that.

I have the same problem since the update for HomeKit/Airplay (which I use).

In this case, the Streaming Stick+ fires up my old DLP w/o my asking it to; it's on another floor in another room.

I'm at a loss knowing how to defeat this issue; DLPs have lamps with limited hours (consumables) and this is costing me.

Mine keeps doing it too.  Driving me crazy!!  I've contacted Roku and they told me to contact RCA.... So now I wait for a tech to call me back...

The TV manufacturer is the one with the fix. Mine was unplugging it, holding the physical power button on the TV down for 15 seconds and plugging back in.  Tried all the online options first but this one solved it.

  • I tried removing the app from my phone and batteries removed from the remote with no luck from that

I have the tv on a table and the cable box under the tv.   I noticed  the cable receiver box was very close to the TVs led and moved to the other side. The crazy off and on stuff stopped. I guess the tv was picking up things from the cable box making it go on and off.

I am also having an issue with my roku (Express 4K+) and the official roku app on Android. My cell phone is my daily alarm, and whenever the alarm goes off, if the Roku app is open (for instance, because I used it for private listening the night before), the Roku app turns on my TV. That's silly and it must be a bug on the app. I'd like that to be fixed.

Also, some times while I am using another HDMI input on my TV (a video game for instance), the TV will switch by itself to the Roku input. Why? no clue, it just does it, and I'm 100% positive it's the Roku ordering the TV to do that, because my TV is not even smart (no apps or anything like that on it, it does not even have a clock!). The Roku app works well usually, but it has these annoying bugs. And before you ask: no, I do not have Alexa, or Siri, or neighbors that can make jokes through my windows or anything like that.

I'm using the Express on a couple of TVs in the house and they all see to turn-on randomly.  I just entered our guest room where the TV hasn't been on in months, to find the TV and Roku on.  I'm thinking maybe the other remotes are to blame?  It only does it on two TVs in the house, all on different floors.

  • I do not have the app on my phone, and it still turns itself on.... I was kind of freaked out like wtf? but I searched, and it said to go to system settings and check for updates and update it because it would turn on if it needed to be updated. I did that and it hadn't done so until tonight I went to the settings and there was an update, so I updated it and hopefully that works again
