How do i hook up a record player to a roku smart tv

I have an audio technica with built in preamp. I tried running the white and red to the AV, and even plugging in the yellow even though the other end isn't connected to anything, and i can't figure out how to make it play. The AV input on the tv just says "no signal detected (is it on)" and I'm definitely running audio to it. What can i do to make it play audio through the tv speakers?

    Do you have an old DVD player or VCR you can connect to the video input?  It sounds like it's not going to activate the inputs until it recognizes a video signal.  Sometimes I really hate "smart" TVs.  🙄

      I think i might have to plug in my mini Sega or atari to this one. The bummer is that i have all my retro games on display hooked up to a different tv, im going to have to break up the collection.
