Connecting my phone to my Roku

I’ve moved into my dorm room and chose to buy a Roku to go with me because I wanted to watch tv in my dorm room without disturbing my roommate using the private listening. I can’t connect to the Roku though because it says it can’t find the Roku? I was connected to the same network and was on the same “account” for my rooms WiFi but it still couldn’t find it. I tried doing the manual ip thing but it says my ip isn’t supported because it’s public. It’s like 11.xx.xx something. Is there anyway I could fix this? I know it’s not the end of the world to cause a little noise in the room, but I still don’t want to disturb him.

I applaud you wanting to spare your room mate from your TV noise but you may not be able to do it.  For privacy concerns, most hotel and dorm systems are set up so that multiple devices connected to them cannot "see" or interact with each other.   This prevents everyone using the same dorm system from accessing everyone else's accounts, but it could also prevent your phone from accessing your Roku.

Let me caveat that I have never done this myself so have no experience with it but ....

One thing you might be able to do is set up your own WiFi travel router and connect that to your dorm system.   Then you connect your phone, your Roku, and any other devices to your own little private WiFi network.

Here are some at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=travel+router+for+hotel+wifi
