Closed Captions won't go off

Everything I play, the closed captions start. Even if I turn them off they come back on after a moment or two. I went into the main settings and it continues. Where do I go from here? It's annoying. We have 6 rokus and 2 roku TVs. Have not added anything for at least 2 years. This has been happening for at least a month.

Thank you

  • Hi 1556,

A warm welcome to the Roku Community!

Thanks for letting us know about the issue you've been experiencing with the Closed caption features on your Roku device. We're here to help.

If Roku's closed captioning doesn't turn off, you can check the system-wide settings. From the Roku Home screen, navigate to Settings Accessibility Captions mode and ensure it's off.

Please note that most channels and apps have their own settings and will override the settings in Roku menus. Check each channel's individual settings and turn off captions. Some channels manage their own content programming, including closed captions and subtitles on content. Reach out to the channel if changing the captions on the Roku settings does not resolve the issue.

For more detailed information, see this link: Turning closed captions on or off.

We hope it helps. Feel free to keep us posted, and we'll continue assisting you further.

    All the best,
    Chel

  • I'm wondering if, instead of asking each individual for their device model, serial number, etc., someone could check into the software bug on Roku's end. It's obviously not one person's individual issue. Thank you.

  • I'm having basically the same problem.  Every app I open using a Roku box starts with CC on, even though the global setting is Off.  I can still turn them off in the app ( until the next time I open it), but it's a PIA

      Thanks for sharing here, birdieputt74!

We understand you're unable to turn the closed captioning off, and we're here to investigate.

Can you share what specific device is affected? Also, did this happen after an update?

      Please tell us more!

The captioning is testing us!  Just one of our tv's started this captioning on its own.  It shows "off" on Roku settings and "off" on Samsung settings, yet it continues.  I saw that three channels were mentioned as having their own captioning, but we don't use any of them.  I spent 30 minutes with Samsung rep to get help, but he determined it was not Samsung.  I'm out of ideas and patience - could you please suggest a solution.  Thank you

I’ve got a Phillips… everything in Settings is in the *off* position. I did the low level reset. Didn’t work. Did the unplug the tv for a while. Didn’t work. Unplugged both the tv AND the cable box. Nope! Ended up doing a complete factory reset. Had to re-enter EVERYTHING like I had just bought the darn thing. Did that work? Well heck NO!!! And the craziest thing is that there are no captions in the “smart” channels! Just in regular programming!!! I don’t know about you, but this is the last Roku I’ll buy!

Same issue here! Turning closed captioning off doesn't work. I'll go to an app and there it is again. It's happening on all 3 of our TV's. This seems to be a software bug on your end, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate you investigating it. (P.S. It's not because of a specific app's settings.)
