It could be that the TV isn't receiving any video signal from the Express. If you're using the TV's USB port to power the Express, try using the supplied power adapter plugged into the wall.

I suppose if you paused for a long time during setup, the Roku could have gone to sleep. Have you tried waking it, such as by pressing the home button?
If that doesn’t work, and you’re sure you have it connected to the correct HDMI port, and that the HDMI port is otherwise working, then I would be inclined to exchange it for another one at the retailer.
