Can't get remote to pair with TCL Roku

I've searched the other topics.  I did not find any solution to this problem. It looks like this subject usually gets sent to upper level help.

I had to reset my TCL Roku serial number 1903GC004869A01987, Model 65S421, service no. 65S421TBAA. I tried to pair my remote model: RC-FA1, 3226001105.  

The green light on the remote flashes.  The screen on the TV says remote is pairing.

Eventually, the green light on the remote quits flashing.  The screen on the TV keeps saying the remote is pairing. It never does.  

I eventually turn the TV off and reset it again to get to the "Let's get started >" screen

Interestingly, the remote will turn the TV off and on but I can not get pass the "Let's get started >" screen as the remote will not accept the input for "English" that is on the first page.
