Black Screen with new Roku express

I have a new Roku express and I only have a black screen, no Roku home screen. I have plugged and unplugged everything as advised, and used the seqence of buttons from one poster but nothing appears. The Roku box is flashing purple and flashes when I prees the remote. Does anyone have anymore suggestions before I return it to Amazon.
