Airplay disconecting after a minute or two

For the last few weeks, every day, I have had an issue with AirPlay disconnecting within a couple of minutes.  It does not matter if it is audio only, like podcasts or screen mirroring.  The only solution I have found is to go into my Roku TV settings -> power -> restart.  Then AirPlay will work fine for the day.

This seems to have started after the last Roku OS update.

  • For at least the last two months the AirPlay feature has stopped working properly. It connects to the TV and plays content for about 30 seconds without showing any visuals (artwork, video, etc) before disconnecting. I have to power cycle (system restart) my Roku TV every time to get it working properly.

This is extremely annoying and has already been previously reported to Roku customer support! There has been at least one update to my TV since this started that still has not fixed the issue. I demand an update and resolution on this issue in the next update.

        RokuJohnB,

For troubleshooting I’ve rebooted the router, reset network connections on Roku TV, made sure all devices were updated to the lastest software, toggled the Fast TV Start option in Roku settings. Issue has continued across updates to all devices from previous software versions.

  • I am still having the same issue after reseting the pairings.  Also, rebooting my computer does not help, I have to power cycle the Roku TV

Yeah,… I have been having the same issue.  Using my iPhone with AirPlay to Roku TV, it will work for approx 10 minutes, then disconnect.  (Steaming from safari).   Seems like technology should be better than this. 🫤

    Hi BAMHousehold,

    Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thank you for letting us know about the issues you've been experiencing with the Airplay feature on your Roku TV. No worries! We're here to investigate further.

    • Could you please send us the software version of your Roku device by going to Settings> System> About?

In the meantime, you may also reset the existing paired devices on your Airplay by navigating to your iPhone's Settings Airplay About Airplay.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Thanks,
    John

My software version is 13.1.4 - Build 1512-ET

I assume the reset pairings you provided was for the Roku not phone as I dont see that on my phone, and I am using a Mac to airplay anyway.  But I did do the reset on the Roku now and will see how it goes.

I will add I have to do this restart everyday.  I generally use airplay on in the morning, so I am not sure timing, but I do know that everymorning this is happening.

      Thank you!

This has been happening to me as well for several weeks and is VERY ANNOYING! I have to power cycle my Roku TV every time I want to use AirPlay. Resetting my AirPlay devices has not fixed the issue. Resetting my router has not fixed the issue. Happening with multiple AirPlay capable devices. There has been at least one update to my TV since this started that still has not fixed the issue. We demand an update and resolution on this issue RokuJohnB.

  • I'm curious if when you try this with audio-only content and the Roku is being wonky, do you get audio but without the actual AirPlay "now playing" screen?

Whenever I see that happen, I usually get 1-2 minutes of playback and then it stops. Much like you, I then can use it for a day or two, or sometimes an hour or two before if I reboot the Roku. What's odd is this happens on two devices - an older TCL Roku TV and a brand new Streaming Stick 4K. It very, very rarely glitches like this on a $70 ONN Roku TV in the kitchen. All are on the same network.

To me it feels like the AirPlay "app" is low on resources, perhaps memory, and it just crashes out.

Yes, that’s exactly what happens. The audio content will play without showing the actual airplay screen, then just disconnects. That’s wild that it’s not happening with the cheaper TV but still feels like software issue. I like your theory about the AirPlay app possibly crashing. Hoping they finally fix this in whatever the next update is.

I suspect they rely on Apple for this - it has to be licensed and everything and Apple has little incentive to be perfect here. They'd rather you have a HomePod and an AppleTV I think. 🙂

I know Roku doesn't publish specs on their players, but I have 4(!) of them.

The cheap kitchen TV is very new. I have a very old TCL Roku TV (maybe 5 years) and that one has had this issue forever. I have an express in the bedroom, but haven't used it for Airplay yet. The TCL TV has a 4K stick (brand new) - I bought this one because Youtube and some other apps were getting slow on the built-in Roku. Sadly, it has this problem as well.

My best guess is that out of all of these, the ONN TV's Roku has the largest amount of onboard RAM. The only other difference is that the kitchen TV is almost primarily used for AirPlaying podcasts (I didn't plan it that way... just found that podcasts + kitchen work is just not TV content friends). But that also might point to a memory issue - I never run other apps there so perhaps that leaves plenty of free RAM for the Airplay app.

Sadly I can say the TCL TV has been doing that for a few years, so I'm not sure there's a fix coming. The 4K stick is new, but has been doing this since I've had it (4 months?).

  • Same here. My iPhone(s)/Mac show the checkmark, then it disappears, and then on the Roku the  Airplay instructions appear. Very frustrating. Even factory reset the Roku. It's identical and repeatable.

There was an automatic upgrade on my Roku 3, evidenced by the new startup animation. Then this issue appeared.

Is there a way to uninstall a Roku update?

It's great to see your post here, Bergelmir!

We see that you're also having an issue with Airplay. No worries; we're here to get this sorted out.

Please note that once a new update is installed on your Roku device, you cannot roll back to the previous software version. However, the Airplay issue needs to be investigated, as it happened after an update.

Your device details will give us more visibility into your concern. Could you provide the following information below?

      • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and Software Version. (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
      • Tracker ID (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button five times, followed by the Back button five times, and provide us with this ID)

We are anticipating your prompt response!

      Best,
