Status light showing recording but nobody known is checking the camera

For a month or so I’ve noticed that at random times my living room camera will change from the blue status light to red status light for recording/ live viewing but only me and my fiancé have access to login info as far as I’m aware unless someone hacked my camera but the light can stay blue for a day or two or some days every hour or two it changes to red and neither my or my fiancé have our phones on us they’re in our bedroom so how can I tell if I’ve been hacked and if so how can I fix that because I did change my password but it didn’t help

  • Hi Tommy_A,

A warm welcome from the Roku Community, and thanks for posting.

For the post-install setup, the red light on your Roku camera is an indication that it is viewing a live stream or the camera is recording. Additionally, the motion detection settings work together to identify movement in a specific area. Whenever motion is detected, the status light on your camera will briefly flash red to indicate an event has been recorded to your cloud for 14 days for you to access before it is removed.

For more information on how to manage and adjust the settings of the motion dection on your Roku camera, kindly visit the support article at this link: How to adjust motion detection settings on your Roku Smart Home camera or video doorbell

Keep us posted on what you find out.

    All the best,
    Kash

  • I’m having the same issue as well. I have the indoor camera se and it’s all been set up. After couple of months later I noticed the solid red light coming intermittently lasting few seconds from solid blue light indicating that either someone is watching/recording but I don’t have subscription for recording and neither my wife and I have been using our phone to check at those times. I really feel like Roku needs to address this issue seriously because it sort of leads to think that our account is hacked, (especially changing our passwords) which is not safe.

We are having the same issues, I have several cameras and started noticing it on one then several of the others. I talked to Roku but they were not much help. I have changed my password several times. I have started turning off all my cameras and just checking on them for a few seconds at a time. I don’t have a subscription either. This is freaking me out bc makes me think someone is watching us.

  • I am having the same issue. Has anyone had this problem resolved?

  • The lights on 3 of my Roku cameras have been going back and forth colors red and blue and no one else has access. It's been happening for a few weeks and it is cringing us out! I've disabled cameras until Roku can resolve.  Help ROKU!!!

Mine is doing the same thing but the red light seems to be triggered by movement… if you sit still, the light stays blue… if you shake your hand of even slightly move, its flashes over to red for a second or two.. but I never notice it doing that early on when it was first install….

That's what it was! Thank you so much! Although this was not mentioned in your post, the issue with the red light coming on randomly and freaking us all out is due to the motion detection in the setting. If this is set to record motion then the light will turn red, giving us all the feeling that we're being watched. Turn this off and it will fix the problem!

  • This is not okay Roku it is been a month and this problem is still persisting the red light solid after your camera is set up indicates that someone is looking through the camera. Absolutely nothing is set up to motion detect me or automatically record it is only simply set up to view it when I want to view it. And I'm reading stuff where people are saying that they are getting hacked and they know for a fact they are. This is really creepy and social media is about to find out exactly how creepy and how much you guys aren't fixing the problem. And if social media doesn't work I guess the better Business bureau is next

I recently also began to have this issue. I called and they were no help and very clueless. The responses have also not been helpful in this thread. They must know this is a serious issue and it's very concerning.

        Hi, Marshmello1960 Mikawilliams412,

A warm welcome here in the Roku Community!

We understand that you are worried that you might be hacked or that somebody might be watching you on your Roku cameras. You have nothing to worry about. Please be advised that the blue-flashing light status indicates connecting to Wi-Fi, while the solid blue light indicates connected to Wi-Fi, depending on the Roku Smart Home cameras that you have. Status lights change from time to time since the internet connection can also be intermittent at times; hence, the Roku camera is trying to reconnect to the Wi-Fi right away. There are also red, white, and yellow lights that indicate different statuses. Please check out this link here so you can understand further the meaning of the status light on your Roku Smart Home camera. Also, Roku uses a P2P live streaming solution, which establishes a direct connection between a user’s phone and their Roku Smart Home camera. In other words, Roku or others that are not connected to your internet and are not signed in to your Roku Smart Home app do not have access to users’ live stream video footage because it is not processed or transmitted by Roku’s Smart Home network or cloud services.

        We hope this helps.

        Kind regards,

        Eunice

  • I am having the same issue. It’s about every 3-5 seconds it changes though. Blue to red. Sometimes it stays on blue for longer and sometimes it stays red longer. Have no idea what is going on. Feels like we’re being watched. This issue needs to be addressed.

      All the best,

  • I noticed that the red light was triggered by motion, so I turned the motion detection sensitivity setting to 1 (lowest setting) and the blinking has stopped for now.

OMG!!!! 😱.... This is happening to me too! Has been for a long time, I've asked Roku support and they don't seem to understand what is going on! I am the only person with the password (which I've changed 3 times) I've had live recordings taken when I'm sound asleep. I've even went so far as to change my WiFi network name and password and monitor the full mesh topology to see all devices logged in! I do see a "Host PC" thar makes me very nervous, but I've noticed my phone and a few other devices show up as that at first... But it's never went away. I wonder if it is a wifi hacker somehow that somehow bypasses the username and passwords? Also.... FYI, I'm in TN and my "voices" have a very Northern accent 🤷. They are also very foul mouthed and at times sounds like sex, even making inappropriate comments about my children! My husband said I was hallucinating because he doesn't hear it. But he's also a veteran with poor hearing! All this time I've been assuming he's right, but now .....ROKU WE NEED AN ANSWER!!!

I have had the same issue as many in this thread and ROKU does not seem to be taking any of this seriously. The ROKU "support" team offers Noone any kind of support except to reinstall everything and change password.. then it persists. I know for a fact that they have logs with IP address of any device that connects, and yet they will not check.

Yes they do not care that our cameras are being hacked and watched through by someone else. That’s why they will lose a customer in me.. I’ve had my cameras unplugged for months now and I’ll never plug them back in until it’s fixed or I get new cameras that aren’t going to be so easy to hack.
