Brand new Roku LED color lights won't update firmware

I got two new Roku "Smart Home Smart Bulb SE" which I went to set up. They are added to the app and wifi, but are stuck in an infinite loop of "This device needs a firmware update" and never complete.

I have restarted the app, reset the devices (powered off and on) but nothing seems to work.

There was another thread that suggested to manually update the bulbs through Account, Firmware Update, but I don't seem to have that option in the mobile app nor on the website.

I'd appreciate some help or I'll have to return them. It is unfortunate that brand new devices even need a firmware upgrade, and that it is impossible to use them without one. That could cause major issues in the future so I'm questioning if these were a good purchase at all, so I'd also appreciate insight on if disabling the mandatory firmware checks is an option.

  • Hi Anonymous,

    Welcome to the Roku Community!

We would be more than willing to walk you through the step-by-step process for manually updating the firmware of your Roku Smart Bulb Color SE through the Roku Smart Home app.

    • Update a single device:
The smart home device you wish to update must be powered on and connected, and it should not be restarted during the update.
    1. Select a device from the Home screen in the smart home app
    2. Tap Settings in the top corner
    3. Tap Device info
    4. Tap Firmware version to see the current software and build version and check for an update
    5. If a software update is available, tap Update

After the software update is finished, your smart home device will automatically restart.

    • Update all your devices at once:
Your smart home devices must be powered on and connected, and should not be restarted during the update.
    1. Tap Account from the navigation bar in the app
    2. Tap Firmware update to see all your devices
    3. Tap Update at the top of the page and all devices with an available update will download and install the latest software

After any software updates are finished, each smart home device will automatically restart.

I don’t see why they had to make it this complicated. What firmware does a lightbulb need??
