Variable framerate?

Are there any known issues with using cellphone video on Roku? We're noticing sometimes the phone compresses the image data to 24fps to save bandwidth, while during high motion shots it changes to 30fps to retain quality. Will I need to split it apart and normalize the framerate to 24 by dropping extra frames or duplicate frames to 29.97 for roku to use it, or can it be used as an mp4 with VFR?

  • Based on the observation that Roku video output is always* 60Hz, if you are going to single frame rate, it better be 30/29.97 - since for 24fps the player does 3:2 pulldown (or worse) anyway. Out of curiosity, how does Roku perform currently on your VFR videos?
