roUniversalControlEvent keyboard events and Scene Graph?

I tried the iphone Roku app with my scene graph application that implements a custom keyboard.  I notice that my focused component is getting onKeyEvent() called, but with a key of 'unknown'.  Is it possible for me to consume keyboard entry like GetChar() of roUniversalControlEvent?
