Roku Video Player Hanging Detection

Sometimes we have issues where a user's Roku gets into a hung state while playing a video, occasionally crashing and restarting altogether. Are there any hooks available to catch these types of severe errors within an app, so that we can log the metadata about the file that the user was playing? These are errors that are occurring and not sending an roSystemLogEvent (http://sdkdocs.roku.com/display/sdkdoc/roSystemLog).

  • Hi,

    Sorry, no, there are none.

There is some data about the firmware crash itself that is uploaded to our servers, so if you know the date/time, timezone and ESN of the incident, theoretically an engineer could dig through the logs to find out some information about it. I say theoretically, because our engineers don't really have spare time to do that for you.

Ask your users to try to identify which channel they were watching when it crashed, and if they had captions turned on or not, and send you the serial number of the device from Settings -> About, along with the time, date and timezone, model and firmware version, and if possible, the steps that they followed to initiate the crash, starting with launching your channel.

    Which channel is it?
