Roku Channel Outside US

Is it possible to publish a Roku Channel only outside the USA? Thanks

  • When you create your channel on the developer site, you can pick the regional channel stores in which you want to offer your channel. Current Channel Stores are US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and "Rest of World".

  • Keep in mind that this only restricts in which your Channel Stores your channel is offered and users are assigned to a Channel Store based on their location at the time of account creation. We do not do geographic filtering of the channels after installing, so if you need to prevent content from being streamed to certain geographies, the Channel Store restriction will be insufficient; you'll need to do geoIP filtering through your service.
  • Ok. Thanks.
What about adding the channel with the vanity code? Can be a channel added in a account registered in US if the channel isn't published in US Channel Store?
  • No.

If the channel is not published to the US channel store, and someone with a Roku registered in the US attempts to add the channel, it will not allow them to add it.

The only caveat here is if someone registers a channel outside the USA and then brings that device into the USA, then they will be able to add the channel using their non-US registered Roku, but they will not be able to add any US-Only channels to that device unless it is re-linked to an account created in the US, and any channels added prior to that relinking will be automatically removed from the device after it links.

Has there been any progress on adding an "All Regions" option where the app changes CDNs based on the channel store/country code?

What I mean is - for now you can go through and check all the boxes for the regions to have it in all 'current regions' but in the future, wouldn't it have been a better idea to add a specific "Planet Earth" checkbox, so it would be all current regions plus any that are added in the future? Otherwise we'll need to go back and constantly check for new regions to add to new channel stores for each individual channel that we publish.

If Rest of the World ever splits into multiple channel stores, will it automatically cover extra checkbox selections?

Why is Ireland separate from the UK?
  • Typically, if you choose Rest of World, you will be included in new regions as we launch them (though given notice to opt out ahead of time).

The Republic of Ireland is a different country from the UK, with different currency. Hence a different Channel Store. Northern Ireland is included in the UK channel store.
