HELP: I Want To Stream Movies From My Home Network

I was using my XBOX as a media center before, but it got the dreaded RROD. I've been using TVersity, but that doesn't seem to be working with Roku. Is there a way I can create my own channel that will allow me to stream movies from my home network to my Roku?

  • I use Roksbox, a private channel, to stream videos, music and pictures from my NAS to my Roku. It pulls data from a web server, which my NAS happens to support but if you can setup a web server on your PC it can stream from that too.

There are other options (private channels) out there that do the same or similar things, but Roksbox worked well enough for me that I didn't evaluate the others.

Please note that some of the private channels only pass on files. Meaning
those files have to be in Roku friendly formats, (like MP4 video).

This applies to Roksbox, which I happen to use and enjoy. Since I had no
stored media, (music or videos), it was no trouble for me to make sure
they ended up in a Roku friendly format.

However, some other Roku private local media streaming channels will do
trans-coding. Thus, covert from Roku un-friendly formats, (like MPEG2),
to Roku friendly formats, (like MP4).
