Suddenly no sound from soundbar, HDMI ARC and CEC stopped working

I have a soundbar connected to my Sharp Roku TV via HDMI ARC. Everything has been fine for a while now. The other day, without having changed anything, I noticed a few problems:

- I have no sound coming from my soundbar when I set the soundbar to the HDMI ARC input. Other inputs on the soundbar play audio fine, and setting the TV audio to output audio through the TV speakers or optical/aux works, so I assume the issue is with the TV.
- Using my Roku remote to change volume used to show the volume level in the corner of my screen while it changed the volume on the soundbar. The lights on my soundbar show that the TV actually *is* adjusting the volume on the soundbar, but the volume level number isn't indicated on my TV anymore, and as stated above, there's still no actual sound being played.
- Up until now I could turn on my PS5 or Nintendo Switch and it would power on my TV and change to the appropriate input. This isn't happening anymore.

I didn't change anything. Just the day before, all of this was working fine, as it had been for years. I tried power cycling the soundbar and the TV, connecting the soundbar to the TV with a different HDMI cable, and checking for updates on the TV (no update since January). I can't get sound working anymore.

Anyone have any idea what's wrong here?

  • Thanks for keeping us posted, CompC!

We appreciate the attempts, and we're here to help you further!

It is important to understand that not all HDMI ports are created equal. Only the HDMI ARC (or HDMI eARC) port allows your soundbar and Roku TV to communicate properly over the HDMI cable. Double-check the connection and make sure your soundbar is connected to the HDMI port specifically labeled "HDMI ARC" or "ARC" (or "HDMI eARC" or "eARC").

We highly suggest trying these steps: Before you look at connection settings, try restoring a possible breakdown in communication using the suggestions below.

    • Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable. Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable that connects your soundbar and Roku TV. Wait a moment and then firmly reattach both ends of the HDMI cable, making sure to use the HDMI ARC port on your TV.

    If the behavior persists:

    • Power cycle your soundbar and TV. Unplug the power cord from your Roku TV Ready soundbar and your Roku TV. After a few moments, plug the cables back in and power both devices. Test again.

Please try doing this and see if it helps with what you're experiencing.

    Thanks,

Thanks for keeping us posted, Gatorgogo wydoihavetoregi!

We truly appreciate all your efforts to resolve the issue, but we understand that it persists.

Please be advised that there is a connectivity issue between your TV and sound bar. We highly recommend that you reach out to your TV manufacturer, as this issue seems to be related to the connectivity between your Samsung TV and Yamaha soundbar. They will be the ones who can handle this kind of issue on both devices.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if there's anything else you'd like us to address. We'd be more than willing to listen and take immediate action, as we are committed to finding a solution to your concerns.

    Best regards,

  • I have had Rolu 3 since 2016 hooked up to my old Samsung.
    And I loved it.
And now, as a customer of Comcast/Xfinity since 1987...yes, 30 years...i am cutting.
I bought a new LG G4 65 for the front room with Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar,
and a samsung over-qualified @$450 for bedroom, with smaller (much smaller) age-appropriate soundbar.
and i bought ROKU ULTRA for the LG
    I also bought a firestick....relevant later
and Roku 4K stick for the bedroom...figured i would donate the roku 3 to museum collectors.
this all happend over 2 weekends Memorial Day.
    Worked fine for 2 weeks."
Then, ROKU ultra stopped working audio.
    Then Roku 4K stopped working.
    BUT
sound is fine through the native apps on the tv .....
so i hve read the VOLUMES and VOLUMES of messges about this issue and have concluded.
ROKU SUCKS and rests on its laurels of best device.
I have done power (idiots choice as that always works...or does it)
    factory resets
    changed cables
    changed ports
    even

EVEN used my old ROKU 3, and none work.
    BUT

that sample i bought to test things out...that amazon firestick.....
    works just fine.

SO I have given up and moved on.
Wish the rest of you good luck.

  • Chromecast, Sonos soundbar no longer working after system restart. This sh@t is driving me nuts. Why does this company keep delivering faulty software? No idea how to fix.

I would unplug the power from everything involved for a minute or so and then plug everything back in.  Sometimes things just need a hard reset.

  • I am using the soundbar with subwoofer on UpStar Tampo P32ETW without ARC on HDMI port.  After streaming for approximately 30 minutes sound would dropout and video would be fine.  I disconnected power for 30-Mississippi count and plugged back in.  Problem disappeared.  Did not need to update software or do factory reset.

  • I am having the same problem with a Roku TV and a Vizio Sound bar. It had worked perfectly with my previous TV. Now it is a very annoying yet, intermittent problem. I will get no sound coming from the soundbar and have to go into setting to switch the audio to the TV (which really sucks). While in those audio settings, the soundbar does not show up under the HDMI/arc input. Then maybe hours or a day later, the Vizio soundbar shows up in the settings again and I am able to reconnect and get sound. Very annoying. I tried a different cable... same thing. So... I don't know if the problem is with the soundbar or the TV. But since I have not run into this problem before last November when I bought the TV, I suspect it's the Roku TV. Ugh!

Thanks for flagging this soundbar issue to us! Reaston

To help me get deeper into this, could you tell me:

      • When did you first notice this issue?
      • What Software Version is the Roku currently on?
      • What steps have you taken so far to fix this issue?
      • Is this issue occurring with just one app, or is it affecting all of them?

      Looking forward to your response!

      Thanks,

        In my case:

        • When did you first notice this issue?
Like many others in this forum, this started happening sometime in November 2024, after working fine for years.

        • What Software Version is the Roku currently on?
          SW version 14.1.4, Build 7709

        • What steps have you taken so far to fix this issue?
New HDMI cable, Connect, reboot, re-connect, factory reset again and again like 100 times.
Mine shows as: ARC (HDMI3): INACTIVE, System Audio Control: Inactive, no matter what I do.

        • Is this issue occurring with just one app, or is it affecting all of them?
          All the time

In my case, I connect via HDMI to an amplifier, which I assume is similar to a sound bar.

It is frustrating to NOT have a solution in SOOO long.

          Please help.
