Need help with Connection to Soundbar

I have a sony tv from 2016 and the speakers are terrible. Looking to get a soundbar to improve quality but I have seen a lot of differing posts about how exactly a soundbar would hook up to a Roku player. Everything I read is about Roku TVs but not about sony, samsung, or vizio tvs using a roku player instead of the roku being built in. How does the setup work with player instead of a roku tv. Do you need a soundbar with an ethernet plug in? or does everything work fine going from soundbar arc to tv arc without connecting the bar directly to the roku player?
