YouTube shorts play at double speed after initial playing

Ever since the latest system update, all of the Shorts play normally 1 time and then when they repeat the 2nd and any other playbacks are played at double speed, with garbled sound. Moving to another Short video gives a normal playback, but letting it repeat goes into double speed again.

I've rebooted, and checked for updates (get none) and the problem persists.

Anyone else see this? I have a ROKU Ultra.

      1. I highly doubt it at this point. The oldest post I’ve found about this issue is from 5 years ago on Reddit… my tv started recently doing it and now nothing I do, or what they’ve told me to do, fixes it. About done with Roku altogether.

    stop asking for equipment information and saying “we’ll pass it on to the team“ and just fix the darn thing. Don’t care if it is YouTube, it’s your equipment, rather my equipment that I bought from you whatever YouTube is doing it’s your responsibility to fix it and make it work on your equipment. So please stop grousing and fix it. Roku!

    though like another user here said, Roku equipment getting old, maybe it’s time to look for another option besides Roku. I mean if they can’t fix this after this amount of time what are they gonna fail on next. Certainly my next upgrade I will consider something besides Roku apparently has a pathetic support team.

    what suggestions to other users here have as an alternate to Roku?

      Same issue here after updating software on ROKU Ultra on 4/25/25 to version 14.5.4, build 5944.

    Yes, same problem, on our Roku Ultra. We have a Roku Streambar and it is having no issues. I hope they fix this soon, it has already been longer than I had hoped for an update.....😟

    I have the exact same issue. Verified Ytshorts works fine on other devices like phone -the fast playback speed and garbled sound after the first play is limited to my Roku Ultra.

    Just started noticing it within the past week.

    Thanks for sharing here, Mr_Mxyzptlk!

    You mentioned this happened after the recent update. However, we'd like to know if you have also done these troubleshooting steps below;

    1. Remove the channel: Highlight the channel tile on your home screen and press Star to open the Options menu. Select Remove channel and confirm.
    2. Restart your Roku device (Important step after removing the app): Go to Settings > System > Power > System restart > Restart Now.
    3. Reinstall the channel: After your Roku device restarts, visit the Roku Streaming Store and add the channel again.

    Still having issues? Please let us know so we can dive deeper into it!

      I’m having the same issue with the YouTube shorts speeding up after the first viewing. I have a Roku Ultra 4802CA. I checked to make sure I had the latest update 14.5.4 build 5944. I uninstalled the YouTube app, did a restart then added the YouTube app and the problem still exists. I have also tried watching the same YouTube shorts on my iPhone and I do not have this issue on my iPhone. Is this issue being worked on?

        JRP3532  since you've already done the remove/reboot/reinstall, the problem is within the YouTube app, and not something Roku can address. YouTube is owned by Google, and only they can fix issues with their app on different devices. Roku does not develop or provide software support for 3rd party apps, and almost every app on a Roku is 3rd party. They couldn't fix the problem even if they wanted to, because they don't have the programming code of the app. Only the developer has that.
