Was Movieland.tv deleted?

Has the Movieland.tv channel been deleted from ROKU lineup?   Who can explain why?   It was a great channel.

You can't blame Roku for removing pirated content. They had major legal issues a number of years ago because they ignored channels that we illegally streaming content, so they are forced to do so now.

The movies on Movieland TV have been shown to death since the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's and should be FREE....no one typically watches them except us seniors, who grew up with them on our 3 station televisions.....most every movie on Movieland TV should be public domain by now....even the Disney movies....I'm sick of paying for old movies, that have a very limited audience.....the adolescent thru 40's crowd weren't watching this app....!! ROKU shouldn't be held accountable for independent app developer's content, only their own content.....that's like holding a comedian responsible for someone dying because they laughed themselves to death....!!!....stupid to remove the Movieland TV app....if the feds want to prosecute someone, charge the developers of the app, if they think they are showing unauthorized copyrighted content....Geeeeze...!!🙄

I dont believe they had a choice.  Movieland...one of my favorites as well was breaking numerous copyright infringement laws. Playing movies they didn't have the right to air.

  • Apparently so.  I think it's a great resource.  Hopefully, it will be revived.

Movieland.tv has disappeared before and then come back.

I have a couple saved searches in the Movieland.tv channel/app that are still playing.  (Even though the channel/app home page is blank/empty of library content).

Could be the channel/app is undergoing some development changes.  Also noticed not available in Roku Channel Store currently though.

Unless the developer wajid_bux stops by to update, will just have to wait and see as to the status of this channel/app.

This channel is one of the best classic movie channels on Roku! I want it back!

I think this channel was not legit, it was too good to be true. The channel was not very professionally done. There is no website. The video was glitchy at times. First there was no commercials then too many. You would have to have big money to bring all these movies together. They had more classic movies than TCM on HBO Max. Nobody has even heard of this channel. The only way anyone found it is by searching on a Roku device for a classic movie and this turns up.

It was legit! I loved Movieland. It was my go-to channel for my weekend morning movies (it was a household tradition to watch old movies with my son to try and bridge the generation gap). They also had some classic old horror films that I coul pull up to watch in tandem with my bf in another state. He would find a movie he wanted to watch with me while we video chatted and I could usually find it on Movieland and stream it so the times would be somewhat the same (never could time it perfectly - lol)

Sorry, 'streaming... 'expert' ğŸ™„, but the channel's gone, and (unfortunately), it's not coming back.

I can easily explain why. They had copyrighted films airing for free. The way they snuck them in under the radar was by attaching fake copyright dates.

2 easy examples would be WB still owns the rights to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Disney still owns the rights to Mary Poppins.

We're sighing  because it was really our big "go-to" channel for streaming for older Disney material that the Mouse wasn't sharing, too bad.  Also had older show that are really very hard to find, especially in a free capacity, I was thinking of things like "Brother Sun, Sister Moon", "My side of the Mountain" and other extremely hard to find classics. With everything becoming more "monetized"  on streaming, we're going to have to rethink the "unplug" when it becomes so expensive, we will just have to go back to our DVD library if we want to watch certain shows.  It's too bad that even Kanopy and Hoopla don't have access to these shows either.  Sadness.

The old Disney was great. I do not allow my children to watch any of their new movies.

  • I loved it too! Now where am I going to find a good streaming channel with classic movies? I tried a couple of others and can't get a consistent stream. Movieland always worked great for me!

Some other free channels, which supposedly have classic films (or television), have the worst in films - I've never heard of 75% of them. I would not imagine that too many young people would be searching for those on Movieland in the first place. (Movieland had far more content than what was displayed on any particular day - if I wrote down the title of a film I wanted to watch, I could search.) It was very relaxing. I know very few of the films were 75 years old - most were from the 1950s-70s. They used to be rerun on television easily every year, but I don't think they are being broadcast anywhere now. I just looked at another free channel - there wasn't one film I'd want to watch, I'd never heard of most of them, and the television offerings were flops when they did air 60 years ago.

Just because a movie is from the 50's-70's doesn't mean it is public domain. Those TV stations and basic cable networks that aired them pay for the rights to air them. As noted earlier, copyrights are death of the author plus 70 years. For many movies made by a company, it is set to 95 years from publication, or 120 years from creation, whichever comes first.

  • Movieland TV was a great channel. Nowhere else when searching for a movie could I find one like the original "Operation Petticoat", or the Walter Pidgeon version of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" (which came out years before the TV series of the same name) without having to buy the movie. Now Roku has pulled the channel with no explanation?

I look at it this way: If Roku can take the time to give you a message like "This channel is no longer available. Visit the Roku Channel Store to discover more entertainment. For more details, visit go (dot) roku (dot) com (slash) channelremoved", then why can't Roku simply put the reason why the channel was removed? That web site Roku directs you to gives you no explanation or information on why the channel in question was removed (implied in the web site's name - i.e. "channelremoved").

There is plenty of room on the nearly blank screen that I'm currently look at for such an explanation to be placed. How hard is it to put "This channel is no longer available due to <brief explanation here>" before carrying on with the rest of the meaningless message of how to "discover more entertainment", or directing you to a web site that, according to its name ("channelremoved"), does nothing to explain why the channel was removed. (Are the Roku message typists so lazy that they can't give us - their paying customers - a brief-yet-decent explanation?)

Great channel, not so great Roku service. I hope that channel comes back soon.

  • As others have said, it's because of copyright. Movieland TV isn't exactly legit and has disappeared at least twice before but it always has come back after a few weeks or months. It's frustrating though because it always takes some time before all the movies are added again. I always cross my fingers when it reappears because it will be deleted again eventually. It lasted going on 3 years last time it came back!
