streaming apps on the Roku devices

These Roku devices are utterly unusable watching a video and an ad pops up out of nowhere.  I went into my router settings to enter some DNS settings to stop ads which worked when accessing YouTube on my laptop and desktop; however, on the Roku it doesn't work.  Anybody know of a way to stop these intrusive ads?
