Someone Else Logged Into YouTube On My Roku

I keep my bedroom locked up pretty tight.  Out of nowhere, another family member’s YouTube account was logged into on my Roku TV.  Was there any way this could have happened outside of them getting inside my room and logging into it themselves?  I keep a lock on my door with concrete covering the screws, it’d be nearly impossible for someone to get in here without breaking something or leaving an obvious trace.  They said they didn’t come in here.

  • Hi KB104,

    Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thanks for letting us know about this behavior. We'd like to see how we can help. Have you checked to see if an unfamiliar device is connected to your network? Commonly, devices that can cast to your TV must be connected to the same network as your TV. Changing your network password might be a good option to resolve this.

    Keep us posted.

    All the best,
    Kash

  • I have a similar issue. I'll be using it at my apartment then mid video, YouTube will switch to another person's account. Someone I don't even know. This has happened with 3 different accounts. I just log out and switch back to my account, by why or how does this happen? I assume these are all accounts of people who live in my apartment building.

I think that they were using their phones to cast YouTube onto their TV, and inadvertently casted to your tv. You can disable the casting function on your TV, which means they won't be able to cast to your tv. But conversely, you will no longer be able to use your phone to cast to your TV. It's a trade off.

  • Similar thing happened to me. Could it be that when one is casting their Youtube from their phone to their TV, the inadvertantly also cast it to the TV in the next room?

I have a related issue, but reversed. While watchingcYoutube on my Roku, literally in the middle of a video, I get a notification that I am now logged into (some random account I don't know) and I have no idea how or why this is happening.

YouTube on mobile phone snagging your TV over WiFi.  Doesn't throw a prompt on the TV, not sure YouTube on roku has a setting to prevent this.

        Complain to google.

I've not experienced a Roku YouTube app being logged in to any YouTube account unless the user was actually using the Roku.

Unless YouTube has changed the functionality of their apps to pick up users from other devices, then someone was on your device.

I have been unable to link other accounts to my YouTube app on my Roku, using both iPhone and Android devices, from the phone itself. Using the Roku seems to be necessary, as I would expect.

My thoughts are that someone was on your Roku. They must like it. Now you know what to get them for Christmas.

I think it is possible to log into YouTube on roku using just YouTube app on mobile device.

If YouTube can "hear" the roku via the wufu direct link used for screen casting, it can trigger a login.

This could happen between nearby apartments or similar through the walls, accidentally.

Disable screen casting/mirroring on your Roku to prevent this, and in the Roku YouTube app, log the other account out.  I think the YouTube app on roku also has a forget function in its settings menu.

My screen mirroring mode is set to prompt, and I don’t remember getting a prompt to confirm this.  Is there any way it could have happened without a prompt?

My room has a latch on it with two locks.  The screws have been covered by JB weld.  The only way inside this room is through the windows, and we tape the curtains down to the windows.  If someone came in through a window, they couldn’t get back in to fix the tape.  It’s really unlikely someone came in here.  I make it clear that I don’t want anyone coming in here without my knowledge and I take many precautions to keep that from happening.  I hope I get more replies to find out whether this is the only way someone could’ve logged in on my device, if it’s not there’s going to be some problems for the person who did.

Did your motion sensor that's a part of your alarm system show any activity?

It happens to me fairly often.  I use my Roku at a fire station and people often inadvertently connect the youtube on their phone to my roku.  I just sign them out and it disappears and then log back in on my account.  No harm is done, the offender is unaware that anything is different.  To date, I have found no solution to prevent others from logging in.

  • Are there multiple Roku's using the same Roku account? It's possible somebody changed it on one and it was duplicated over to the others.

  • OK so this just happened to me

Me and my roommate use the same internet and both have roku tvs

Somehow while I'm using YouTube YouTube we are in separate rooms I am logged into his account on my TV

I was actively using my TV no way he logged in with his phone or came in here and did it...I honestly believe that their programming is bad enough that my TV got his information on accident and boom bop made it where I'm logged in. Not cool youtube/roku.

I am not sure exactly how it is happening but I have been in a hotel for 3 days.  Of course, I brought my Roku with me and connected to the hotel WIFI.  On 3 different occasions in 2 days, there have been other accounts that have logged into the YouTube app on my Roku.  Twice while my daughter was actively watching videos and she yelled for me to say someone else logged in.

The YouTube mobile app and YouTube channel on roku together behave in a way that tries to be helpful but is insecure where there are lots of people in close proximity.

If YT mobile app can "see" a casting device nearby (Roku, Chromecast, maybe others) then it will prompt to login the YouTube app on the device.  Most people will just OK that prompt, not understanding what it is doing or assuming it will connect to TV just in front of them (which in this case it does not, but people will just go huh and not think further).

AFAIK, it is only YouTube app which does this.  (Would be kind-of helpful if some other apps like BBC which need a login did something like this in a secure way).

  • Same happened to me. I didn't try to cast anything. My wife told me that my father in law had my account in his Roku. I went to check and it was true. He has his own YouTube account and we are paying the premium as a family. This is so weird. It is like a security issue on both rokus and YouTube. Please fix it!!

Does your father in law live with you? Is he logged into your Roku account? Meaning did you setup his Roku? Roku syncs login credentials across devices under the same account. There isn’t a YouTube account. It’s a Google account.

He doesn't live with me but I came to visit him. i didn't set up his Roku and I've never touched it. I never tried to stream something from my phone to it. I realized the issue when I saw my username in YouTube, I know that it is the Google account, but said YouTube account only to refer to the YouTube app.

      Thanks for the post.

Can you please specify the issue you are experiencing? Is this issue occurring on a specific channel? What are the steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing?

With more detailed information, we will be able to assist you further.

      Thanks,
      Danny

I feel like it's all included in the post. So if you read it I am confused by these questions. The specific channel is youtube (hence the name of the subject/thread). I don't do anything to recreate the issue. It occurs on its own while I am watching youtube.

  • I had something similar happen recently. I purchased a new Roku sound bar, and after I set it up, I noticed three different apps were already logged in as someone else.

The first two seem to be the same person's login\name, so I assumed I had been re-sold a soundbar that had been returned by someone else who'd set up some apps. But, the third app had my sister's login ... So, I ruled out the bought-a-returned-product theory

I have an apartment in my basement that uses a Wi-Fi extender attached to the main / upstairs house. My best guess is that somehow the internet connection is remembering what people did on the Roku downstairs.

The downstairs has its own Roku set up (just a regular Roku, not a sound bar). The two Rokus are not at all connected to each other intentionally, and there is no way someone could have logged on to the new Roku sound bar in the few days since I bought it.

It's still a bit of a mystery, but this is the only thing I can think of that what explained the new Roku sound bar thinking that three apps had already been logged into.

This seems to be a YouTube/wifi issue because I have had the same thing happen on my Firestick and PS5. I'll be in my YouTube app and suddenly I am logged in on someone else's account somehow even though I didn't log out of my own nor do I have anyone else's info. This happened while connected to a public wifi.

It has never happened with my phone which has its own data connection.
