roku exits youtube, amazon every 30 mins

I have a roku express+ and a roku 2. Recently both have started dropping youtube videos or amazon videos at 30 minute intervals. They just exit to the home screen. I think after exactly 30 minutes.
I can resume the video, and watch for another 30 mins and it repeats.
The roku 2 is at another home, so it isnt the network. Both are fed by comcast, but different accounts so I dont think the problem is comcast intentionally doing something (but I havent ruled it out).
I dont think the problem happens on my windows laptop.
It happens with youtube and amazon so I dont think it is an app issue. Did a recent update to both rokus cause the problem?

The problem began in the last month or so I think.

Any solutions or ideas for diagnosing the problem in more detail?

  • I have had the same problem for many months. Apparently, it only affects the express+ units.

Roku seems uninterested in fixing it.
  • rooktoo, thanks for adding your voice. I agree there seems to be very little movement by roku on this. Personally, I would like them to drop back to a version of their software before the problem started. The problem makes it very annoying to watch a video longer than 30 minutes, since it is interrupted and requires going thru the menus to get back to the point to resume.

Sad to say that I'm done with Roku!  I had a Roku 2 (2720X?) and got several decent years of service out of it.  This last spring (2019), youtube started to crash after 20 to 30 minutes into a video (just stop and go back to the Roku home screen).  I tried all the suggestions in vain, and almost bought a different streaming device, but decided to buy a Roku Express+ this summer.  The Roku Express+ is *much* faster and just a superior experience, and no more youtube exiting to the Roku home screen after 20 - 30 minutes into a video........up until about 3 days ago.  Now my shiny new Roku Express+ *cannot* play any youtube video over about 25 minutes without crashing back to the Roku home screen.  Again, I have done *all* the suggestions (yes, even a reboot between removing the youtube app and re-installing).  The problem persists!

I find this just amazing....I've seen *many* discussions about this issue spanning the last several years, and about 2 months into my new Roku Express+, this youtube crashing after 25 minutes or so is back again.  Youtube *HAS* to be one of the most used Roku channels, yet this problem still persists, after all this time, and now on my brand new device.

Roku, it aint good enough to blame the channel makers on this one.  It's YOUTUBE for goodness sake!!  YOU (Roku) need to get on their A$$ to fix this sht!!! No amount of nobodies like me, doing the youtube "feedback" in the youtube settings app is gonna get youtube to do anything.  Roku, YOU NEED to light the fire or your platform is done.

I'm done with it (soooo glad I wasted even more $$ on a new Roku this summer), and so will all my streamer friends that ask me about what streaming solution I would recommend....

Probably in the top 3 apps with Netflix and Amazon prime, and the youtube app *still* has this issue.  Good luck to  you Roku, but you really should be ashamed.

I have a Roku 1 and amazon and hulu are affected.  Started about a week ago.  Other channels seem fine.  If you pause, rewind, or interact in any way it seems to reset the 30 minute timer.

My problem with youtube crashing back to the home screen is probably not a "30 minute timer" thing.  I tried to watch an old movie last night and it crashed 25 minutes and 37 seconds into the movie.  Its different every time, but for me, youtube crashes around the 25 minute mark.....*every* time.

That would indicate that there is not some mysterious 30 minute timer....its probably memory/buffer related, but dang it, its a bug in youtube!

Roku, how has this bug persisted over so many iterations of hardware and software levels?

Again, what's even more baffling to me, is that the Roku folks have either not leaned on the youtube app people to fix the problem, or if they have, they have been completely ineffective in getting one of the TOP USED APPS ON THEIR PLATFORM to work without crashing after 25 minutes into a video.  Astounding...

My Roku 3 has been having issues recently. The YouTube sound will play but no video. I need to press the options (*) bottom and the screen will appear.

  • Hi, The Roku is still going to home after 30 mins. I have tried removing Philo app, restarting, and adding app back, and it doesn work. It has also came back to the button that you use to  launch the app you just installed. Thanks, Michael

I'm having the exact same issue.  It just started yesterday also and I haven't changed or added anything.

Hi PJ, This is crazy. I am totally blind, and my Wife has to help me sometimes to let me know when it is back to home screen. I watch Philo, and when you are watching something live, you can pick back up, but if it exits twice, the feature starts over..So agrivating..! This needs to be fixed!. As we can see..It isn't..lol! Come on Roku..Get it together..LOL!! Tired of sucking limuns..!

Okay, doing some researching they just did an update and that is why I am now see two new icons which say 'add channel' and ' tv/off'.  I'm guessing there's a glitch in this update.  The question then becomes how long before it's fixed.

  • ABC APP WILL NOT LAUNCH... HAVE DISCONNECTED, REMOVED THE APP, RELIAFED THE APP, RESTARTED SYSTEM AS RECOMMENDED IN OTHER POSTS, NO HELP. CONTACTED ABC GOT EMAIL STATING THEY ATE WORKIN ON IT?... I THINK IT COULD BE A ROKU PROBLEM WITH THE ROKU STICK.... MY OTHER DEVICES DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM BUT THE 2 STICKS DO..WHY IS THAT? IF ROKU IS SHUTTING DOWN THE UPDATING OF THEIR DEVICES BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU TO BUY NEW THAN THEY NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE TO THEIR CONSUMERS. A NICE GESTURE WOULD BE TO OFFER AN INCENTIVE TO UPGRADE. EVENTUALLY THE INTERNET PROVIDERS WILL OWN THE STREAMING. I AM VERY UPSET WITH THIS ISSUE AND THE FACT THAT ROKU SITE DOESNT OFFER MUCH.
  • I am still experiencing this issue on my Roku stick. I have followed their suggestions of doing a factory reset on my Roku, updated to the latest firmware and unplugged my Roku to no avail. It's unfortunate that I invested money to buy not one but two streaming sticks and still have to deal with this. I have since quit using them and rely on the apps available through my TV which are limited. I doubt I'll be buying another Roku product after this as I have been considering upgrading recently

I can confirm that this is not a solved issue.  It is happening on every channel I try to watch (Plex, Amazon, Roku Channel).  Just before the 30 minute mark of watching a show, the Roku resets back to the home screen.  I have disabled the screensaver and any other timeout-based function I can find on the Roku with no success.

If it helps, the HW/SW details of my Roku are:

      Roku Stick model 3600X

      SW: 9.2.0 build 4804-24

This stick is powered by the TV, so it goes through a full boot-up process before each viewing session.  It does appear to be tied to some sort of internal timer as I find I can get through an entire show if I make sure to pause every once in a while (before the 30 minute mark).

  • My streaming stick plus stops after exactly ten minutes no matter what service I'm using.   Restarting, updating, changing data saving setting does no help.  This started about two weeks ago.  Prior operation was great, but now this device is going in the trash if it can't be fixed.  It turns off even when streaming audio from Pandora.   Any suggestions?

This is going to sound weird, but you might try fully removing the stick from your TV for a while (to make sure it isn't getting any residual power from the HDMI connection).

I finally gave up on trying to debug the stick that was giving me this problem.  I ended up using the streaming apps on one of my smart TVs so that I could rotate my other roku devices around a bit and take the problem stick out of service.  The odd thing was that I re-attached the problem stick a day or so later to do some more experimenting, and have been unable to replicate the problem since.  The only thing I can think of is that the HDMI connection was keeping the stick partially alive when the USB power was removed.

I found that Anynet on my Samsung TV is turning the ROKU steaming stick off after ten minutes. However when I turn of Anynet, my sound system receiver won't work but the turn off problem disappears.   When I use my Samsung blue ray player to stream everything works.  The problem is the Samsung blue ray player is very limited  and won't steam popular sites like HULU.  My equipment is obsolete!

Sadly, I started to get this problem with an older Roku. So I spent what little money I had left on a streaming stick+. But I'm still having the issue. Whenever I pause long enough for the screensaver to pop up, I returned to watch by pushing play and it had already disconnected me. We're talking less than 10 minutes. And it happens every single time.

I've tried disconnecting it. I've tried restarting it. Nothing changes.

I wish I hadn't spent the money on an "upgrade." At the time I didn't realized that there was a version with a headphone jack and one without. So now I'm stuck without a headphone jack, and the problem isn't fixed. 😕
