Roku Device Keeps Turning my TV Off and On and Off and On

I have 3 rokus and all of them have been messing up for the last 3 weeks or so. The one in my room keeps resetting my samsung tv. I had to disconnect it from the TV and just use my smart TV. Seems there is a major glitch with roku right now. I also stopped using the one in my living room. It won't work properly either. Might be time to switch to another company!

  • I had to factory restart my TV! May take several attempts and all day to do so. But it can be done! It's fixed mine! Scroll up to settings on home screen, scroll up to system, scroll up to advanced settings, then scroll down to factory reset! It's easier to scroll up than down! When it keeps cutting off on you! Put in code it gives u! Then reset everything the way u had it! on't be discouraged because it will cut off on you several times! Just hang in there and u will eventually get there! Hopes this helps!

henjaffe read the post above yours. It was a Samsung update that fixed it, not Roku. I have Samsung TVs in my home with Roku players connected and none exhibit this issue.

  • Not true for me.  Even at the Roku Home Screen, it keeps turning my Samsung TV back on.  This is a brand new Roku Express 4k.

Welcome, and thanks for posting here in the Roku Community, mremilla!

We understand that you're experiencing issues with your Roku Express 4K, which randomly turns off your TV. We're here to help you address this problem.

Will this happen when you accidentally press any buttons on your remote? If so, kindly check if you have the "Fast TV Start" enabled on your Roku Express. This feature prevents your TV and device from totally shutting off and pressing any buttons on your remote will turn the TV On. To turn it off, navigate to Settings > System > Power > Fast Start or Fast TV Start > Uncheck

Also, if you didn't press any button from the remote and the TV turned On, please get back to us and provide the information below:

      • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and OS version. (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
      • Tracker ID (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button five times, followed by the Back button five times, and provide us with this ID)

We are looking forward to your response.

      All the best,
      Emman

I don’t write turning off it turns “ON”. Roku ultra  turns the tv on. I had to stop using it. I did restore to factory setting several times. Roku not usable. I also have problem remote stop working on other Roku units so now have two Roku units that are unusable.

I made sure the "one touch play" in settings is off but my TV still turns off on it's own after about 20 minutes or so. I just installed the Roku Ultra yesterday. I previously had a fire stick and when that stopped working I replaced it with Roku Ultra. I have been using Roku's for years and I never had this issued before. It's very frustrating. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Duh. I went into settings and system and the power saving feature had the TV programmed to shut off after 20 minutes of no interaction. I unchecked the box. 🙄

      Model: 4660X - Roku Ultra

      Serial: YJ004U297720

      Device ID: CK48A4297720

      Software 12.5.5

      Build 4174-46

TV Screen goes on and off as if the roku is starting up, I can tell it is not the power because the TV powers some backlights I installed and they stay on. This problem started in April, 2024.

I have factory reset and network reset several times, nothing seems to help my problem go away. I have scoured the settings looking for automated settings to set to manual so the roku does not make decisions for me. I have noticed that if I leave my roku on (does it ever turn off?) for about 15 minutes or so the on/off behavior stops and I have a steady image. Is that the solution, to "warm up" the roku? But if the roku does not turn off then I have only turned on the TV (Samsung) and allowed the TV to warm up. That makes no sense. I have used the roku ultra and my Samsung TV for several years, so why does it misbehave now?

qp2 No, your Roku is never "off". It will enter a sleep mode after the TV is turned off, but any device that will respond to a remote when it's "off" is not really off. It still needs to be running to receive the remote message.

There's only one setting in the Roku that has any impact on other connected devices, and that's the One-Touch Play. That is how Roku labels their CEC control. If that function is disabled, then the Roku does nothing to control another device. But remember that the Roku remote can be programmed to control a TV via IR, and resetting the Roku won't alter that. The only IR functions the remote will send to the TV is power, volume and mute (if your remote has a mute button). I didn't even program my Ultra 4800 remote, but it controls my LG TV via IR for power and volume. I confirmed its using IR because if I put my hand over the end of the remote (covering the IR emitter) then it won't control the TV. So the Roku detected my TV via HDMI CEC and automatically configured my remote.

  • I have just bought and installed Roku Ultra on my Living room television. As I watch my favorite shows, on occasion, the device shuts off, then shows an error screen for about .05 seconds then the scene comes back frozen until I  select play. Then it keeps doing it. Is this what I need to expect from Roku devices? It is very irritating at times. What can I do or who can I speak to, to remedy this issue?

Swanson926 No, that is not expected behavior. I have multiple Ultra players and none have ever acted that way. Is there any change your installation location might be letting the box overheat? Is anything stacked on it, or otherwise blocking airflow around it? I can use my Rokus for hours without any freezing up or uncommanded reboots.

  • Same happens to me. Roku reading this? I want my money back!!!!!

I don't want this **bleep** anymore

My Vizio TV, model V555-H1, is about 5 years old.  For several of those years I've had a Roku Streaming Stick+, HD 4K HDR with zero issues.  About 5 months ago I started having the on and off thing happening and after trying all the "fixes" I could find online I decided to get another Roku device.  Currently using Roku Express 4K+, HD 4K HDR.  It seems ok for a while, then starts in again.  Most recently I had no issue for about 2 or 3 weeks.  Yesterday it started with the on and off yet again, only now more frequently, like every 5 to 10 minutes.  Do I have two bad Roku devices or do I need a new tv?  Very frustrating and annoying.

I have multiple Roku players connected to TVs, several being Samsung sets. I haven't had this happen with any of them. If it truly is the Roku triggering the TV power, it can only be done in one of two ways. Either the power button on the Roku remote is being pressed (assuming you have a remote with that button) or something in the CEC circuitry is being triggered. You can disable the CEC functionality of the Roku by going into the Settings menu and find One-Touch play. When you find that setting, disable it (remove the check from the box). If your TV is still turning on with that turned off, there's something else going on in your home.

No, the tvs are define the problem, maybe even Roku itself. My tv is such a stresser for me when watching we hope and pray it doesn’t just start battling us mute, unmute, input, power off 3,2,1. This is HELLL

Brandiannland turn off the CEC function in your TV and you should have no problem. Different brands have different names for it, but your owners manual should help you figure out what they call it.

Thank you. Turning off one touch solved the issue of the Samsung TV repeatedly turning back on automatically after turning off with Roku remote.

This is happening to my TV too. I have two ROKU's and this is happening on both withing the past month. Worked fine before that. It is mainly happening when I am watching a recording.

My Roku stick menu does not have POWER as a choice, after I select SYSTEM.

Thanks for sharing your concern here in the Roku Community, Trigger72653!

We understand that you don't have any option to select Power after choosing System. We're here to assist.

Could you please specify what option you would like to proceed with after the System? If you are trying to do a System Restart, you may skip the Power option if you do not see it and just hover your remote downwards, and there you'll see System Restart. If you do not intend to do a System Restart and you are looking for other options, please let us know, and we'll help you further.

We are looking forward to your response.

        Regards,
        Emman

I have an ONN Roku TV and I even tried unplugging it. There's no way to access the settings menu or any menu. It simply turns off flashes on long enough to show the ONN Roku TV logo then off again. The remote won't even work while this is happening.
