pause on films with Roku LE remote

I need to use subtitles when watching a film. When I hit the pause button to read a subtitle, the screen darkens and a line appears on the bottom with a cursor dot. After a few seconds, the screen clears. But this interruption is quite annoying and detracts from my viewing. Is this the normal operation for a Roku LE device? Or is a way I can fix this?

    It's normal operation.  Some apps may override that behavior, but it's the default.  There's no way for a user to change it.
