My device only works when I stand 2 ft from the tv - help

I own a basic Roku streaming device (Device type: Roku Premiere) which I've owned for 2 yrs.  Usually, I'd sit 10-15 ft from the tv to use the Roku - this worked well until 2 month ago.  Now, I need to stand 2 ft from the tv screen in order for the Roku device to work.  I've replaced the batteries (two times within the last month) and I still need to stand 2 ft from the screen.  Please advise. Thanks.

Model numbers are better than names like “Premier” but I think most models labeled “Premier” (if they don’t also include a “+”) came with IR remotes.  (Assuming this is the original remote.)

IR remotes can be bothered by ambient lighting (especially a lot of sunlight in the room.)  I’ve also heard of fluorescent lights interfering with them.  If another remote drops down between the cushions and is firing (because it’s getting squeezed), that can mess up other remotes.  Then again, sometimes remotes and/or IR receivers just go bad.

In the battery compartment, under the batteries, is the remote part number. It typically starts with "RC-". That might help a bit.

If it is an IR remote, it's possible either the remote's emitter is going bad, or something is blocking the sensor on the Roku device. Dirt or coatings or even some types of glass can block the infrared beam.
