MAX login password length

I have MAX (formerly HBO) on Roku Streambar. When I try to login on MAX, Roku does not take the password (it's 8 characters long) and returns an error message saying that I have to enter a 10 character password. Why? I can login onto MAX on my Google TV and Smart TV just fine using an 8 character password.

  • Hi Monsterji,

    Welcome to the Roku Community!

Thanks for letting us know about your MAX login issues. Regarding this, it might be a better option to contact the channel provider's support directly to inquire further and let them know about the issue you have experienced. Most channels on the Roku platform are developed and maintained by the channel providers themselves.

    Thanks,
    Kash

    Hi all,

Channel partners develop and maintain their own channels and their customer credentials. We have no control over partner customer credentials. It's possible that Max has made a new password requirement and it isn't being properly messaged on their Roku channel.

We have escalated this with our friends at Max. In the meantime while waiting for the channel partner to update their channel, please use the QR workaround above, or change your password so you'll be able to get access asap. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate this issue being brought to our attention!

    Thanks for understanding!

  • Hi amyash,

Thanks for your first post in the Roku Community!

Please be advised that channel logins and authentications are handled directly by the channel developer. It might be better to contact the channel provider's support team to inquire further and let them know about the issue you are experiencing.

  • I'm having the same problem and they don't give the option to log in with qr code, so aggravating.

Same issue here too. Just downloaded the app to my phone from Google Play and didn't encounter the error Roku is giving.

  • I'm encountering the same issue. So frustrating. I have no problem logging into HBO Max through my web browser, how is there not a way to link the account to my roku device while I'm actively logged in. I just bought a new roku Express 4k+ device, but I was watching HBO Max on my old roku device not 2 hours ago (replacing because old device was very slow and crashed frequently). So disappointing that this is my first experience with the "new and improved".

Same problem here,, i just downloaded the app on my phone and screen share it to my Roku device. It’s stupid but at least it works

  • HERE IS HOW TO LOGIN WITH THIS ERROR. Select provider and that will give you a QR code and a number. Don't scan the QR Code

    Then goto max.com/signin

Sign in using your login on your phone or computer, then type in that code that is displayed on your roku. This will sign you in.

This didn’t work for me? It just took me to the providers list to choose from.

If you go in incognito mode before going to the sign in site it should work and take you to a regular login page! Sorry if not - Roku really needs to fix their stuff.

This 100% worked on my Hisense Roku TV!…thank you so much for the workaround, Henrywjanzen! 😁

  • We are having the same issue as of June 30th

we do not want to reset the password as it is logged into everything else as of right now and the login process is just so long we would rather not.

This needs to get resolved, my password is 9 characters and fits the criteria for other login providers

Roku isn't going to do anything to fix your problem -- as they have said multiple times before in this thread, they see their job at best as a "go between": relaying customer problems to the channel folks who engineer the apps and must ultimately must make the software fix (although this is a trivial fix and could be done very quickly).

The workaround posted by TetonTech works and is your best bet at this time. Just be careful to follow the steps exactly.

It is Roku's job as the platform owner to ensure that all applications available on its platform meet a consistent set of quality criteria (Apple does this for iOS; Google for Android). Clearly, an app that fails to login fails the quality test.

It is disappointing that users who invest in buying Roku products are being bounced around because Roku quality control didn't do their job. Don't make the app available on your platform unless it works flawlessly. Your customers will thank you for it and spend less time on these forums hunting for solutions when the problem could've been avoided in the first place.

The problem is not with MAX. It works on my Roku Ultra, Premier and TCL rokuTv - but I am having this password issue with a Sharp Roku TV.

Does the TV give you the same option to log in with a provider instead of using a password?

  • login on Non-Roku device like computer and reset the password to 10 characters.

Same issue, Roku 4K stick. The posted  workaround worked for me:  using the QR code, generated a code I then  entered on my phone.

  • SOLVED!! To login to Max on a Roku device follow these steps:

    1. Open Max on your Roku and select "Connect your provider" to get a sign in code.

    2. On a computer OR phone with 'Desktop Mode' enabled go to max.com/signin.

    3. Enter the sign in code displayed on your Roku.

    4. Use your email/username and password and login.

    5. You're signed in!

If you've done these steps before and logged out on your Roku, and in order to make these steps work again, enable 'Incognito Mode' and make sure 'Desktop Mode' is enabled.

The last alternative is to change your password to one that is at least 10 characters long and use the new password to login on your Roku.
