How to turn on closed captions on Peacock TV

Anyone have any tips? I can't make it work

  • Found this because I have the same problem. For me, subtitles already are set to Always On in Roku, and nothing happens in Peacock when I go to the Captions icon and select an option.

This is only a lousy workaround and IDK if it's going to be repeatable, but after selecting the subtitle option I wanted in Peacock then closing and reentering the app, I returned to the movie I'd been watching and the subtitles are now showing. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the work around! It’s completely crazy that we have to use it, but I was going barking mad trying to get the subtitles to work and you alleviated my extreme frustration.  It worked exactly as you said it would!

Hope Peacock sorts this problem out and that Roku gives them a kick in the posterior to encourage the company to make the fix quickly.  Sure, all of us angry people who don’t enjoy reading lips on a bleeping tv show could send a request to Peacock to fix their app, but I’m guessing the most popular streaming company might have a wee bit more influence than we do.

Thanks so much. Occasionally the captions would work but by then I couldn’t figure out what I’d done to get them to work. I followed your directions and now I know how to get the captions to work. It sure is a crazy work around though.

Thank you for this work around. Has someone reported this to Peacock? I hope so. Looking forward to a correction.

Thanks for finding the work-around!  Worked as described.

  • We are having the same problem.  Select subtitles during playback, but nothing comes up.

It doesn’t appear to be a Roku issue, it’s the App, so the tips being offered don’t help.

I have been using the * key when Peacock was on the page with all the aps and a menu opens where you can update the channel. I did that today and got cc on the movie I was watching. Now I'm watching another movie and I can't get cc.  This us frustrating.

      Hi GsaC45,

      Thanks for the update.

Please be noted that some channel manages their own content programming, including closed captions on content. Reach out to the channel If changing the captions on the Roku settings does not resolve the issue.

You can reach Peacock support here: www.peacocktv.com/help

Also having the same problems. Don't need a link to a support article showing how to turn subtitles on. Subtitles say they are on but are not working on any Roku device. Please fix

Your instructions do not work for Peacock. We have captions set to “Always on” and get none. Infuriating.

        Hello Lmmontell

Thanks for posting here in the Community!

Please be advised that channels on Roku are developed and maintained by the channel developer themselves. We suggest reaching out to Peacock's customer support team to see if they have any additional settings or options within their app that may allow the functionality you are looking for.

You can contact them here: Peacock Help Center

        All the best,
        Kariza

      Thanks for the post.

Have you also made sure that closed cations are turned on at the Roku device level?

Jesus. That was annoying. Having to quit the Peacock app and restart it to get subtitles to work was a real **bleep**.

  • Closed captioning is supposed to be broadcast on a separate feed.

Peacock obviously broadcasts them both on the same feed.

Either that or both feeds are coupled together when played on an Xfinity converter box. X-Box doesn't seem to have this problem.

They should fix it. They obviously have no clue how many people are boycotting the app because of this.

It's now February 2023 and the same problem persists. How many more years until it's fixed?

  • I thought I was having the same problem. I would go to captions in the menu part of Peacock and it was set to on always. And no subtitles would show. Then I hit pause. And moved over to the the caption box icon and put it on English and they started working. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I tried that also to no avail.   The only thing that did work was the suggested workaround of setting it and then exiting the app and then starting it again and then the captions started appearing.

I apologize for not updating my post with that new information in a more timely manner.   Thanks for all of the responses.   Merry Christmas!

I can’t even get the CC option in Peacock to switch from “OFF” to “ON” to try the workaround of leaving the app and going back in to get the Closed Captioning to work. Once the word “OFF” is highlighted—what button on the Roku remote do I use to change the word to “ON”? I’ve tried “OK” and all of the purple arrow buttons surrounding the “OK” button as well as the “*” and “<-“ buttons.

  • Closed captions are displayed when playing Peacock on my computer; however the closed captions are not displayed when playing Peacock with my Roku. I have the Roku closed captions settings turn on and the closed captions are displayed on all other streaming channels but are not displayed on Peacock. Any suggestions as to how to have the closed captions to be displayed wirh Roku?

This is an issue with an app running on Roku  Roku should be addressing this issue with Peacock, not telling users to contact Peacock themselves.

rc6 is correct. Every platform has QA standards; they don't just let any old garbage app onto the platform. Roku needs to work with Peacock to get this fixed, especially because it's an accessibility issue.

Roku, please provide a status update.

  • First make sure Roku captioning is set to always on. Then, restart your Roku. I literally just had to do this to get captioning back on for pPeacock. My captioning is always on, and works just fine for Prime, Britbox, Acorn and Netflix, but Peacock seems to lose the setting. Restarting Roku works.

That's a workaround that shouldn't be necessary. Yes, you can get the captions to work with Peacock if you fiddle with the setting and restart the app every time, but it's annoying and a waste of time. This is an issue with the Peacock app that runs on Roku. Roku needs to address the issue with the app developer, not provide workarounds or point users to Peacock support.

  • Got it! On the Roku home page highlight the Peacock square then push the * key on the remote and update the app. Then open the app. If the problem is still there, exit the app and turn your tv off then on again to give the update time to work. The interface between the app and Roku is not working properly.
